The point is, what difference does it make? Even if it doesn't interfere, they obviously have a reason to ask, so why not comply? Is it really that hard to shut it down for 3 hours? Why do people think that they know best?

Their reason to comply is so people pay attention during the safety brief. But the problem is that people don't pay attention even if their phones are off. People are still reading newspapers, books, magazines, talking to other people. It's a control measure. That's all.
Say it is, how does hurt to follow instructions? I am not going to make decisions on what instructions I should follow or not, because I trust that there is a reason behind this. I don't feel the need to question policies that were put in place for a reason Regardless of what that reason is, I am flying on a plane, and I will follow their instructions.

FWIW, I cannot think of anything worse than people being allowed to freely use their phones on a plane. I would have to just open the emergency door and throw myself out.

I'm not saying it hurts to follow instructions. Just that it's a stupid rule. Lol Me putting my phone on airplane as opposed to off isn't a way to stick it to anyone, it's just convenience.

I'm a flight attendant. I realize there is no evidence that cell phones interfere with the flight. BUT, the FAA tells me I have to tell you to turn them off (for now). If FAA is on my flight and sees me not doing my job, I get fined. Not just my company but me personally. Now, I couldn't care less if you put it in airplane mode, just put it away when I'm doing my compliance check so I don't have to be a bitch. Because I will be. If you are an ass and continue to use it in front of me, I promise I will make it an issue.
I've heard the reason why people are asked to put them away is if in case of a "problem", the cell phones won't be flying projectiles that can kill people. Now THAT makes sense to me. And I do put my phone away--I just don't turn it off. **shrug**
