My confession is I never turn off my cell phone. I don't have it out so the stewardesses to see, but I do not turn it off. There's no proof that a cell phone signal crashes airplanes. I've even received text messages and nothing has happened. So if you hear of Alaska Air flight going down, chances are it's because of me. lol

My cell service is through Alaska Communications--if that makes any difference. Now I'm not saying I have service the entire time, but stuff does come through. I've checked--surreptitiously of course. lol

I never turn mine off. Airplane mode FTW! After all, I am so important that I need to check my phone immediately upon landing. Or, I'm just that addicted to the damn phone.

I think some planes have some sort of detector letting them if electronic devices are on. On Sunday they asked us repeatedly to turn off our electronic devices and that they could tell if people weren't turning them off. I don't know if they where pulling my leg.

My confession is I hate it when people recline their seats in a daytime flight. It should not be allowed!
I see that we disagree on everything in life.
Yeah like I said in a previous post, I'm too cheap to pay for first class, so I'm reclining and enjoying the belief that I'm actually comfy and that I have room.

I hate when they tell me to turn my Kindle "off." I have an old one, so there is no off, just a sleep, but there's still a picture on the page (which pissed off flight crew once because they claimed it needed to be completely off, so now I just hide it). Also, if my Wi-Fi is off, it shouldn't matter. But I still comply, because I'm a rule-follower. ::grumble, dirt kick::
Tons of people leave their phones on all the time now. I turn on airplane mode and once I can use it I am playing candy crush the whole flight. I really think they only want your attention to go over the emergency procedures. If they allow this then no one will be paying any attention.

I heard from a flight attendant that they have you turn off phones only as a measure of control, so that you are paying attention to safety instructions etc.

I turn mine off because I would never get a signal, anyhow, and even if I did, I am usually on flights less than 3 or 4 hours, so it's not a huge deal to wait and check my phone. I'm not important enough to get a ton of messages or calls lol.
And I am pro-seat reclining as long as you aren't an ass about it and recline slowly, not like a bat out of hell.
Ha ha - this reminds me of the time my parents convinced me they were getting reports from the cable company to see how much television I was watching (I had a one hour per day limit, but was a latchkey kid). My sister had a good laugh at my expense, then told me the truth.
My pilot friends say they can often tell if someone gets a call or text. It just gives a little fuzz into their headphones. That could be critical at the wrong time, but there are rarely critical moments.
That said, I usually leave mine on but in airplane. I've done the math on how much EMR is likely to get to the cockpit from my kindle when I'm in row 40. I'm not worried.

Clearly I am the opposite on flying issues than most on the board lol I HATE seat recliners. It irritates me that people blatantly ignore instructions to turn off electronic devices. I assume they have a reason for asking me to do this, so I comply. I would rather err on the side of caution and follow instructions.

I don't get this whole not turning it off when they ask you thing. My H flies chartered flights a lot and they all use their phones the whole time, but they're never told to turn them off in the first place. But when I'm on a plane and they ask me to turn it off, I do that. Is it so hard? Are you that special? LOL *adjusts halo*
I turn off my crap Nokia phone because it doesn't have airplane mode and would die 5x faster, but everything else just goes on airplane mode. DH does the same. We put them away for the time we're supposed to, but it doesn't make any difference having it off versus airplane mode. We've also heard the same from various sources that having devices off is to make sure people pay attention to safety instructions and not because it will cause interference with the flight. Last flight we we're on couple people we're ignoring the instructions to turn off devices and we're still using them openly. One attendant came by and gave a warning. They kept using them out in the open. Next attendant that came by made the people shut them off as the attendant was watching.
I think they just made up that safety shit so that people wouldn't use their phones on the plane. Can you imagine what an irritating nightmare that would be? People just gabbing away for the whole flight? It's bad enough on the damn bus that you can get off whenever you want.
I turn my phone off because it roams and roams and drains the battery. If not for that, I would leave it on.
I am a pilot and I assure, there is no way cell phones could jam the airplane guidance equipment. If it could, you would see crashes on the news every night because A LOT of people leave their phones on.
