Tis is totally a political game both sides play to look like they held out for the best deal possible. I worked for two states that play this game regularly. Even if they do shut down, it won't be for long, because they all stand too much to lose.
The dirty little secret in NY was that the republicans really didn't mind government shut downs, because while their was no budgets, emergency expenditure bills capped spending for that portion of the year at the previous year's allocations, de facto limiting spending for that portion of the new year and making it that much easier to meet budget limitations.

I have been watching this pretty closely. I hope there will be a last minute deal but wouldn't be shocked if the shutdown happens.
I am a contractor. I am trying to figure out what the hell happens to me if it does. I am glad I was already planning on not getting paid for a few months but I was hoping to eek out one more paycheck.

I thought all of this with sequestration - and that happened. Then I thought the same with civilian furloughs - and those happened. So I'm feeling less than hopeful that they care anymore.
They keep threatening this and then at the last minute "oh we made a deal!"
I think neither side wants to look like they caved to their base voters so we get this political game of chicken. Buuuut maybe I'm wrong, which would suck because DH is a contractor although his contract is deemed essential so I don't know how that would play out.

This exactly. That sequestration has been in effect with no effort or apparent interest in lifting gives me doubt that there is any concern.
No number, but unfortunately, I think chances that it will are pretty good.
I thought there was no way they would let sequestration happen- and they did.
At this point I don't have much hope, and I'm frustrated and angry with all of them. My area is very affected by the sequestration, and until it's lifted, odds of me finding a job are pretty low. Hiring for office positions has pretty much stopped, and I can't do anything on my feet.
i don't give a damn what the actual chances are, i'm sick of congress dicking around and making the function of the government and millions of people's livelihoods a fucking game.

I hate it, too. That's what they treat it as. Some game of chess, and oops, if millions of people get fucked over, totes too bad!

DH (a Fed. employee) thinks there's slightly better than a 50% chance there will be a shutdown. But he doesn't think it'll go on for long, if it does happen.
They'd better get their act together, I am so over this crap. Between EVERYTHING my office does being more difficult due to sequestration, the furloughs over the summer, the shooting in our building last week (of course not Congress-related), and now the threat of a shutdown, this has been just the shittiest year.

I'm with you except for the shooting. And it's my first year here. Way to make an impression gov't.
