I'm pretty simple with mine as I use GoodReads as a database of books I actually own. So my shelves are the same as the shelf catagories I have for my physical bookshelves, with the mandatory read, to-read, and currently reading:
audiobooks, ebooks, donated, and borrowed are general catagories for organizational purposes, so I know where a particular book is if I am looking for it again.
all read currently reading to read favorites beach reads carolyn has read (I keep track for my MIL haha) ebooks excited to read (helps shorten by TBR list into a TBR sooner list) first reads (only one ) for school future releases mama fuller (from my deceased grandmother in law, who left me a bunch of her books ) need to buy nest recs part of series (I'm in the middle of several..) read in 2011 (I reread a lot and it messes up the count for each year) read in 2012 read in 2013 want to reread later
I want to add: didn't finish (none so far but I'm tired of sticking it out and hating it) kid books I want kid books I own romance mystery/suspense YA paranormal who dun it Plus a shelf each for favorite authors.
I have a lot of shelves, but they mostly fit into three categories: genre, location, and theme. I read a lot of books that are tied to specific places I've lived or visited frequently, so I use my location shelves to keep track of that (especially to help me remember how some titles ended up on my to-read list). I started creating the theme shelves to use with the Goodreads recommendations to find new books along the same lines.
I use Library Thing, so I have "Collections" (think shelves) and tags.
Collections: To Read My Library Wishlist Currently Reading Read but Unowned Favorites For the Boys (books that I have purchased/plan to purchase for the lending collection at the residential facility where my DH works)
