I don't love the idea of having money tied up in a 529 since it seems a bit restrictive compared to other investment vehicles, but I wouldn't get into an argument about it with anyone. It's one of those things like paying off your mortgage early that makes things a lot more manageable for some people.

However, it sounds like that wasn't this woman's point at all. Will have to go look at the post now.

I dont think it is wrong to use the babie's (lol) money on food or diapers. People buy you diapers for the shower, so why cant you use shower gift money for diapers? Or just stick it in your bank account and use it as you go along?
I dont think you should do that if the money is earmarked for college, etc. if the person wrote it on the card.
My SIL gave us $250 cash after L was born and said, use this for takeout.
