We are having our large family room in our new house carpeted after all the wood has been installed in the rest of the house. We were supposed to go this weekend to look at carpet and padding at Home Depot since I'll be having a baby this Wednesday, but my daughter got a nasty virus so it looks like I'll have to do some online browsing instead unfortunately. Any advice? Since we are only doing the one room, we want really nice carpeting and padding that will hold up well over time, what do I need to know/look for?
I still have to choose carpet for our house. My contractor recommended to choose 100% nylon. He's a high-end builder so I assume a 100% nylon carpet is the best.

Nylon is the way to go, expecially with kids. It is a better product and will wear better, be more stain resistant and do better with pets and kids.
We got new carpet last year and did a lot of research. Every thing I read said do not get your carpet from a big box store. Go to a carpet specialist. They have better products and better warrenties for similar prices. Splurge for a nicer pad also, it makes a big difference.
