I thought it was because we would be the last to pass gay marriage and medical marijuana, but... really?

Ouch!!
I do have to say that after moving from California to Texas at 14, I felt the Texas schools served me very well. I was lost in the CA schools and failing. When I moved to Texas, the school system saved me and got me interested in learning.
I too came to TX from CA when I was in 8th grade. The schools in my district are way harder here than where I came from and the grade for an F is 20 points higher than it was in CA. I can see this with a lot of districts in the state though. I'm just thankful we are in a great district.

Yes! I remember realizing that a 60 here is an F and in CA it was a D, and passing, lol. Overall, I felt that my teachers were so much better here than in CA. Obviously, this is probably just luck but I went from failing and being uninterested in CA to being an A/B student and loving school here in Texas.

60 is a D? WOW! Here 69 and below is an F. DD is going to the same district I transferred to in 8th grade and her classwork along the way has been way more challenging. I don't know if it is because of the district or if they are teaching harder things that much earlier now to try to keep up with the rest of the world.
Since at least one involving horses was not far from here, I'm not surprised. But the Bestiality Horse Farm up by Canada has been closed for a couple years now. I think these stats are old because the comment on bestiality not being illegal. It's been illegal since the Enumclaw guy with the ruptured colon from doing the nasty with a horse, so it's at least two years out of date, right?
But the stats were back in 2010. I haven't heard of any horses getting sexually assaulted recently so maybe Georgia or Florida has us beaten with their multiple dog cases more recently.
