My DS had a birthday party to go to yesterday for a friend. Earlier in the morning, as we were driving, we were talking about the party and I asked him what he wanted to get the birthday boy for a present. I named off some random things like Play-Doh, trucks, tractors, etc. And then, V says, "A gun." Clear as day! I've never heard him mention a gun ever before! He's 2.5, almost 3. Then I asked him who talked about a gun and he said the name of one of his teachers. I asked a few more questions and that was it. They haven't said anything about gun safety/that sort of thing at school. Should I, uhh, casually bring this up to the teacher or chalk it up to some weird-o thing? I was totally caught off-guard when he said it.

I'm very pearly clutchy about kids and guns, so yes, I'd bring it up. Not in an accusatory way, maybe just mention that V mentioned hearing a teacher talk about a gun, and you were wondering in what context so you could follow up with an appropriate convo re: safety, etc with him.
My DD has come up with some ridiculous stories after I've picked her up from the sitters. It's mostly just come down to her misinterpreting a situation.
I usually text the sitter and say "OMG, P is so hilarious...she said you guys ran out of gas on the side of the road today and you left her in the car alone! What's the real deal?"
The above was an actual scenario. The real story was that she had to pull over because she thought she had a flat tire. There was a car that pulled up behind her asking if she needed help and she said No and went on her way. On the ride home the sitter told my DD that the nice people probably thought she had run out of gas. LOL.
She STILL talks about those 10 seconds that she had to get out of the car to check her car.
My guess is there were kids playing a shooting game and the teacher said "we don't play games with guns" or she told a kid "play guns aren't allowed at school" and your son heard it. So she'll probably have no clue what you're talking about.

I agree with this. She might have made a point to tell the whole class that it's not safe to play games with guns or something.
