for not having seen The Avengers yet. But the truth is, I was always more into DC than Marvel comics, and I haven't seen most of the other Marvel movies either, so I feel like in order to watch The Avengers, I should watch the ones that came out before it too, and that's just too much of a commitment for me.

I love all the Marvel movies so I'm no help. But I think it would still be enjoyable if you haven't seen the others; you might just miss a few of the jokes.
Thor kinda sets up Avengers though. I mean, I saw Avengers before I saw Thor and still enjoyed it, but I understood some of the lines and general set up once I'd seen Thor and gone back to rewatch Avengers.
I'm just getting a tiddlybit strung out on superhero movies. It seems nonstop. I need a breather. Well, really, I need a Wonder Woman movie and THEN I need a breather. I could go for a major movie based on some other geeky fandom that is at the same quality level as all the superhero films. Star Trek is really the only other thing right now, right?

I think the same argument can be made for Captain America, too. You need a little background on both Loki and the tesseract to get what's going on, but I bet a lot can be inferred from just seeing The Avengers. It's hard to know since I saw all the earlier ones first.
It's like when people were confused by what was left out of Harry Potter movies; I already had the knowledge from the books so I didn't even notice. My brain automatically filled in the gaps with prior knowledge.

Tell me how much I'm missing.

I recommend Iron Man 1 & 2 and Thor. I enjoyed Captain America, but it wasn't my favorite.
You don't need to watch Iron Man 3 before the Avengers. In fact, I would hold off until after you watch it.

Me too. If you read the books, you won't be confused!
I liked Captain America ok, but it definitely wasn't my favorite.
See, and I thought Cpt.Murica set up Avengers about as much as Hulk did. Decent background information about them and the Tesseract, but not a lot to lend to the story itself. Whereas with Thor/Avengers, they're basically using the same villain, kinda anyway. And then there's the final scene in Thor that actually has Fury, Dr. Selvig and the Tesseract interacting and all that. I think it's just that there's more characters and plot lifted from Thor than the others. I do think Thor on its own is near the bottom of the list for awesome superhero movies, but I think it lends the most to Avengers. It's kinda like Deathly Hallows Pt. 1 in my mind. Not a whole lot happened, but it set up the next installment nicely.
But again, OP, Avengers is fun on its own so you can definitely watch it without watching the others and follow along just fine.

I liked Steve as a character, but the rest of the movie/plot is pretty meh. I like him better in The Avengers.
I haven't either. Spidey is a huge Marvel fan, but yeah.
It is harder for me to get into movies though. I would much rather read the comics.
Awww! Poor Spider-Man.
Have you read Ultimate Spider-Man: The Death of Spider-Man? I really enjoyed that, as well as the follow-up, Ultimate Fallout. The first issue of Fallout was so sad, but so good.

I have seen Thor. I thought it was just "eh". Iron Man is probably the one I have the least interest in, but yeah, I'll give it a shot.
I have actually read some of the Ultimates (like, back when they first came out...LOL) but I don't remember a whole lot from it. I know the basic backgrounds on the characters but I'd be hard-pressed to tell you anything else.
The only Marvel character I ever really got into was Punisher, and that was mostly because I adore Garth Ennis. But a lot of my comics knowledge in general is coming up on ten years old at this point. I don't hang out in comics shops up here the way I did when I lived in NY. (Not gonna lie: I kinda miss it.)
Oh, actually, I used to read a lot of Daredevil too. The Frank Miller years mostly. We shall not even mention that movie.

YES. Every time I turn around, there's another superhero movie, and really that's why I haven't seen most of the newer ones. I love them, but it's just too much. A Wonder Woman movie would be FANTASTIC though.
How about a Sandman movie? Now THAT could really be something. I've heard rumors of it over the years, but I don't think anything has ever gotten off the ground. Huge potential to screw it up of course, but if done well...

You lost me at this, lol.
See the Avengers! You don't have to see the others, although Thor and the Iron Man ones are worth watching. Captain America is take-it-or-leave-it.

No, I'm usually not home when Spidey picks up his comics. They are usually bagged with boards by the time I see them. I'll eventually read it. I'll have to search through his comics to find it.
I've never met a comic book movie I didn't like and Avengers is my favorite. I don't think you need to watch the others to understand Avengers at all, but Iron Man 1 & 3 and Thor are must watchs in my book.
