I don't know if they have rolled out the magic bands to everyone yet-when we were there in Aug they hadn't. I saw people with them and they seemed so much more convenient but we didn't get them (we stayed at a Disney property too).
Not sure about the bands. As far as the contemporary, I haven't stayed there in a few years, but was on the property last Christmas when we stayed at a different hotel. I thought it was looking pretty run down, and seems like primarily a conference hotel. It's nothing like it was when I was a kid!
Our neighbor works at Disney, and she and her husband just spent the night last Saturday at the Grand Floridian (their assigned hotel) so they could do a cast member test of the new magic bands. There are still some kinks as they work on trying to get credit cards connected and working for all the magic bands.
One of the tiny kinks seems to be a timing issue - if you haven't checked into your hotel yet and had your credit card linked in, they may not work in the parks yet as a way to pay.
I assume that they are working very quickly to have all the tiny issues found by cast members resolved so that the guest experience is seamless. Should be very soon now!
Can you look at another hotel option on property? There are quite a few others to choose from besides Contemporary.
I just got back yesterday. We used the Magic Bands and they were GREAT! I have never stayed at the Contemporary we always stay at the Polynesian. The only hiccup we had with the bands was that you have to use the same finger as the second form of ID. If you forget the finger you have to wait about 30 seconds longer! Seriously, I have been there over thirty times and the bands are the best change they have ever done.

Have you priced the Wilderness Lodge? While it isnt on thee monorail it does have boat service to the MK. Another option is to rent DVC points from a member who owns at Bay Lake Towers at the Contemporary.
My favorite hotel is the Yacht Club; it has an amazing pool and its walking distance to EPCOT.
