I do not like mayonnaise, so I don't put it on my sandwiches. But I put any other condiments on one side of the bread, or in a zig zag across both sides if I am having it in a roll.
I put condiments on one side. H puts them on both. The amount he puts on both is equal to what I put on one side so it's not really about dryness (that's what she said).
Now, for hot dogs? I put condiments under the dog, between the dog and the bun so as not to get them on my upper lip when I bite down (that's what he said).

I put mine directly on the meat. Is this not a common alternative for putting in on the bread?
This is not as effective. Bread will retain the condiment(s) better.
I don't know about that. Bread is all spongy and I think it sucks up all my yummy flavors. I think I can totally taste it more if it is directly on the meat.
