okay this question is kinda funny considering I've been IN the hospital for the last 5 days, lol. But I showed up with the clothes on my back and my iphone so I want to do better next time I am here
What did you pack in your hospital bag for yourself and for baby? When I get home we are basically going to pack it right away as it's very possible I will end up here again sooner than planned, although hopefully I can make it to term at 36 weeks.
Our hospital provided very little (which probably isn't the same for you) so I'll skip entire list of the crapton of stuff we lugged there and back.
The stuff I was glad I had were probably the obvious: hair ties, chapstick, comfy clothing (mine was all dark colors...black and gray), cell phone/charger, baby's coming home outfit and my Boppy. I didn't take my Boppy the first time around and survived, but it was a nice 'extra' to have the second time around.
I had a few toiletries (toothpaste, touuthbrush, deoderant), flip flops, my own robe, hairbrush and ties. Camera, phone, and chargers. SNACKS! Lansinoh nipple cream. I learned the first time the hospital only had medela cream and I didn't like it nearly as much. I also took some books the first time because I had 2 days of pit and 2 days after a c-section. The second time I was in and out in 36 hrs.
For baby I had a coming home outfit, a little blanket, and a pacifier.

I scaled it down a lot btw my DS and DD. Here's what I took/needed for DD:
Comfy pillow Hoodie sweatshirt Scrub pants (I went home 20 hrs after birth, so I just took one set) A nursing tank BFing cover (lots of family came to visit, and I didn't want to flash them all) My own tolietries iPad, phone, camera and chargers Snacks Wallet Flip flops Lanolin 1 outfit for DD Carseat
Don't bother with any feminine hygiene supplies or underwear, your hospit should supply all of that.

For me:
Clean, comfortable outfit for going home. Yoga pants are a good choice. Fuzzy slipper socks - but my feet get cold easily Nursing tank / bra Toothbrush/paste/floss/mouthwash Shampoo/Conditioner Deodorant Make up if you want it Chapstick/lotion (it got dry in the hospital) Entertainment (laptop, camera)
For baby: 2 outfits -one in new born size and one in 3mo size. Carseat + cover (DD was born in Feb)
Hoodie Yoga pants Nursing tank Going home out for us both Flip flops Things to make yourself clean and pretty Camera Phone My pillow Baby book for feet prints
Pack a bag for your husband too.
I didn't need nipple cream because it was supplied. If you are breastfeeding and took a class, pack that material. I was stressed out I wasn't doing it right.
I didn't have a bag packed when I went to the hospital because she was early. If you forget something, someone can get it for you. The most important thing is the camera and charged battery!

This was pretty much our list. I would add: iPod & charger Bag for DH 2 pillows Boppy Gel soothies Earth Mama Angel Baby Nipple Butter (better than lanolin)
Animal crackers made a great little snack while in labour check whether your hospital provides wipe while you're there - ours provided diapers but not wipes comfy clothes for nursing that look decent-ish for visitors and pictures Refillable water bottle slippers receiving blankets and going home outfit for baby

Our hospital gave is nothing I had to bring diapers, wipes, feminine products, everything. But I think the US is good about that I really dont remember what I brought, but a few things we bought. Magazines (labour slowed down) snacks (also during the slowness of my labour. However, I think I wasnt allowed to eat so my H did well) cell and charger.

I had a huge list and I know I overpacked. What I remember really needing:
Shower stuff for me and DH Bath towels for our showers Nursing tank tops Comfy nightgowns that I could nurse in (no pants because I had issues. With a normal birth, you could probably wear pants) Camera, video camera, and chargers Something to go home in that will fit you when you feel fat and yucky. I underestimated how bloated I would be due to IV fluids DVD's -- DH and I watched them after the epidural kicked in Boppy Extra pillows Nipple cream. I hate the Lansinoh and prefer the Medela.

I used almost everything I packed:
Toiletries Robe and slippers 3 nursing tanks, 2 pairs comfy knit pants 2 pairs regular underwear (sorry, but I got sick of the mesh panties by day 2) pillow My Brest Friend nursing pillow camera + charger iphone snacks (though we didn't eat nearly as many as I brought)
For the baby: 2 going home outfits - nb and 3m size 2 A+A swaddle blankets carseat
I packed a bag for H with basic clothing changes and his toiletry kit.
I would also say that when you go home, bring EVERYTHING the hospital leaves for you. No really, EVERYTHING. J needed a very tiny formula supplement for 2 days when we got home and they sent us with the nursette bottles, but I was stupid and left the nipples there because "eh, we don't need them, we have bottles at home!" Um, yes, that were sealed and needed to be sterilized before they could be used. So that is just what poor H had to do when we got home at 9pm and were completely out of sorts. It was really really dumb. Please learn from my mistake.
I brought a ton and used everything. I had 5 pairs of yoga pants, t shirts, hoodies, nursing bras, tanks, panties, makeup, hair stuff, other toiletries, boppy. I brought 4 outfits for DS, & the only one that was a waste was the newborn size. He wore Sleep Sacks the whole te we were there, because he could bust a swaddle like a champ.
I never read any of the books or magazines I packed. I laugh now at the thought that I would have "downtime" and feel bored.
I did, however, bring DD's babybook, which included space for her first footprint. I put my doula in charge of that project and she got the footprint in the book within DD's first half hour of life. I also had time to write her birth story at some point before I left the hospital.
Besides that, what pp mentioned- clothes for me and DD, chapstick, deodorant, hair stuff (rubber bands or clips, a comb), lansinoh nipple cream if you'll be BFing, a camera. I also brought a nursing nightgown and robe. And some burt's bees apricot oil for DD's scalp. I used it on the cradle cap she was born with, along with a small baby comb.
DH went out and got me hot food to eat. The hospital food was awful.
Labor -snacks -change for vending machine - pillow from home ( last time my pillow was horrible) - baby book for foot prints - cord blood kit - camera with charger - video camera - cell phone with charger - license and insurance card
Postpartum -comfy clothes -plastic flip flops for shower -always infinity overnight pads (I felt much more comfortable in these) - toiletries - boppy - clothes and blankets for baby - breast feeding book - Earth mama angel baby nipple cream - nursing bra - nursing pads
I brought a lot of stuff, but I didn't use much. I slept through my labor, so I didn't need anything to entertain me. I thought I'd want to wear clothes, but I ended up staying in the hospital gown until the last day.
Stuff I actually used for me: Shampoo/conditioner and body wash Face wash Toothbrush/toothpaste Deodorant Lotion Makeup (it made me feel like a human again) Chapstick Hair ties and barrettes Brush Glasses/contact case/contact solution Phone/charger Camera/charger Flip flops Outfit for coming home (yoga pants, nursing tank, cardigan) Zip-up hoodie - I didn't actually use this because it was a billion degrees in my room, but I'm glad I had it
For baby: Books to read to her each night Coming home clothes (newborn and 0-3, nothing that went over her head because I was still scared about breaking her) A&A blanket
For DH: Clothes Toiletries Kindle Snacks
This isn't really something to bring, but I also wish I had thought to have people take pictures of us. I have a couple of pictures of me with the baby, a couple of pictures of DH with the baby, and only one picture of the two of us with the baby - the one a nurse took right after I was all stitched up.

I brought my own pillows--I slept so much better having them there. And 2 outfits in different sizes for DS--he was 9'6 and he needed the 3 month outfit so I'm glad I had it with me
