For kids? The Marbles Museum is awesome and only $5 for admission. If you like beer, there is a bar called the Flying Saucer that has over 250 beers. Also if you like beer, there are quite a few craft brewers popping up. Aviator in Fuquay, Lone Rider in Raleigh, Carolina Brewing Company in Holly Springs. the website to visit is visitraleigh.com.
If you don't have your heart set on Raleigh, western NC is prettier this time of year.

Technically the colors are changing in early to mid November in Raleigh and the colors will be done in the mountains by end of Oct. I'd add Big Boss to the list of good breweries. The science museum is pretty cool and the botanical gardens at NC State are nice. Raleigh little theater and rose garden are also pretty. Raleigh is a pretty cool walkable city.

I live in Dunn, which is the middle of nowhere to me, and I work in Fayetteville. Where are you? I agree Raleigh is very walkable. But if walking is too much, there is a living social deal right now on Segway tours!

Some of my favorite restaurants are Sitti {lebanese food}, Raleigh Times {also a bar, but GREAT food}, Poole's Diner, Beasley's Chicken & Honey, Cowfish {burgers & sushi & burgushi}, Coquette, Pop Up ice-cream {downtown} if you have any type of specific food, let me know.
I would check out the State farmers market, there are two buildings and you can eat at the restaurant for breakfast or lunch. I would recommend walking around downtown, checking out the capital building. There is a website for downtown raleigh events, you should check that out and see if anything looks like it would fit your interests.
