Yes. I count audio books (abridged or not), e-books, and regular books, and the books my husband reads aloud during story-time. I consider a book a book no matter how I "read" it.
I count audiobooks in my yearly total. I figure I'm still taking the time to enjoy the story so I see no reason not to count it in my personal records.

I don't have goals like read 50 books a year, or whatever. But I do put them on my goodreads list. If I listen to something on audio, I'm not going to go out and read the book version too (well, not likely). It's a story I already heard, right? I can move on to something else on my 300+ list of books I want to read.
For those who do maintain a reading goal, I guess you have to decide for yourself what counts as "reading."
I defintiely count them. I figure I'm still spending the time on them, and still getting the story. Some of the audio books I've gotten from the library have been good enough to make me want to buy the book.
I have a separate audiobook goal. And then on goodreads I have a 2012 books and a 2012 audiobooks shelf. I figure that I listen to enough audiobooks in a year (about 50) that a separate goal / shelf is appropriate. But I really think you could do whatever you wanted!
