We have been letting Layla cry at night if she wakes up (midnight only) I argued with my H that something is wrong with her so we should soothe her, but he was the "bad guy" and we agreed to let her cry. Last night she woke at midnight crying and crying. It was horrible. We watched her on the monitor for the longest 4 minutes ever. Finally she rolled over and we noticed that her entire back was wet -peed throughher diaper. Poor girl. She was crying because she was wet. You have never seen two parents run into their baby's room so fast. We changed her like a sport and we gave her water and cuddles. She was asleep in 3 seconds once she was dry.
No more letting her cry in the middle of the night. She is a good sleeper. (after the first round of Ferber a few weeks ago).

J is finally a good sleeper at night so if he is awake and crying or screaming in the middle of the night (short of the random ah! and then falling back to sleep), something is wrong and I go in immediately. Sounds like Layla is the same way, so I would agree that throwing CIO out the window for random middle of the night wakings is a good one.

Sounds like a good plan if she's a good sleeper otherwise.
Are you using overnight diapers? If so, maybe try going up a size in the night time diapers. I'm lucky that both of my kids wouldn't bother to wake up if their diapers leaked in the middle of the night, but I loved not having to deal with a mess.
One night dd would not go to sleep. She just sat in her crib wailing. Finally h goes to check on her and she'd thrown her blankie out of the crib. I felt sooooo bad.

We did a modified Ferber to get DD to put herself to sleep around 6 months (we had to -- her two hour+ bedtime routine was wrecking our marriage and my sanity), but I can't imagine not checking on a child who wakes up crying. You never know what could be wrong -- fever, etc.
I would, however, check on DD, fix whatever needed fixing (diaper or whatever) then just leave her to put herself back to sleep. I also practiced a "if she really needs me she'll yell loud enough for me to hear her and wake up" philosophy starting around 9 months or so. (Our monitor got weird with picking up sound, so I turned it off and just figured I'd hear her.)
