I think the only downside to registering early is the chance that things could get discontinued, but I'd rather take that risk. I plan on registering soon after we find out if we are having a boy or girl.

I started putting it together around 20 weeks. No harm in putting the basics on there and doing some research. People might want to give you baby things for Christmas, so I would get the registry going by November.
I think we are days apart. My shower will also be in mid-January and I hope to be finished registering by end of November and have already been researching things online, making a list, etc. I don't know if there is a downside to registering earlier but I have a million things to do and we're still working on the nursery right now.

We started registering before we found out, then replaced the gender neutral stuff (bedding, swaddles, etc) once we found out.
We're slow, and like to check out reviews on things before we put them on our list. We're still not done, but our baby shower isn't until December.

I've already started online registries so I could add the big stuff as I decided and researched things. We'll probably go in person and add more things when we find out if we've having a boy or a girl.
The technical rule is you need to register before any shower invites go out but I'd start now so you have time to play with it - you can always start it online and go in store later on
I found that things did get discontinued, so if you register now you should check periodically to replace things as they are canceled.
FWIW I registered at Babies R Us and Diapers.com.
BRU screwed up in a big way. Someone went right to the store and put $250 on their "V.I.B." card which would have been great, except gift giver (who lives out of state and couldnt come to the shower) was told in the store that I would be notified via email, which I was not (because BRU was emailing me at xxxx@yaoo.com, rather than yahoo.com). I actually found out about it by accident and was embarassed because i had not sent a thank you.
Also, money on that card can only be used for diapers, wipes or formula. Don't get me wrong- $250 worth of diapers is quite a score, but I am a bargain shopper and would rather have been able to pick what I wanted when it went on sale, and I think diapers are super expensive there as opposed to Target or Amazon. The gift giver thought I could use the funds for anything in the store, which isn't correct.
I loved my Diapers.com registry because I when people bought things, I received bonus dollars that were very easy to redeem on their website.

I read a lot of reviews and took notes from the boards, friends with babies, etc. eventually around 13ish weeks I decided it would be easier to just put it all in a registry. I started a private amazon registry and have a list of some on it that I plan on moving to BRU and I plan on making the registries public in a week or so.. I've already gotten questions about baby crap for Christmas presents..
I started early because I am nuts. A lot of the stuff on my list had to be re-added because BRU discontinued it, it was renamed, or had moved or something.

I did mine 2 weeks ago, a week before my invites went out. I also didn't have to register for much because most of the big stuff I had from the girls was gender natural.

I don't see any harm to starting as early as you please. That way you don't feel rushed and you have plenty of time to remember all the different things you might want. My registry is as much a shopping/reminder list for me as it is a shopping aid for others.
And of course, like others said, keep a watch out for discontinued items. Target is by far the worst at that. Most places turn over their clothes every season but Target turns over all kinds of miscellaneous things.
A potential upside is that if you have your list ready sooner you can be on the lookout for things that might turn up in a holiday sale as an exceptional deal.
We registered in May because one of the places we wanted to register isn't local to us, but is to where we knew we'd be having a shower, and we'd be visiting then. My first shower was September 1st. I liked starting it early and then managing it online as we got closer.
We were told not to register for clothes anywhere any more than two weeks out at the most because of turnover. We're team green so it wasn't really an issue for us anyhow, but I thought I'd pass that piece of info along. I never thought of turnover on clothes for babies like that.
