no middle ear canal?

has anyone heard of this or dealt with it?

our pup went in yesterday to get spayed.  while she was in there and asleep we asked the vet to take a look in her ears since she had been shaking her head pretty badly for a few hours over the weekend (it subsided by Sunday).  we just went back for her follow-up appointment and the vet mentioned that when he was looking in her left ear, he could see down the vertical ear canal, but where it curves in and toward her ear drum, it stopped.  the vet we saw today says that he's never seen it.  the vet who did the surgery and looked in her ears (our regular doctor) has only seen it a few times, but we haven't had a chance to talk to him about it.  

she's a Great Pyrenees.  the vet we saw today said that there really shouldn't be anything to worry about right now unless she keeps shaking her head.  but he mentioned that they could refer us to a specialist to look at it as well.  she seems to hear just fine, but I don't know if she's only hearing out of one ear.
