So my sister has a birthday coming up and I asked what she wanted and she said she would love to get new make-up so I said we can go make up shopping and then have lunch which will be totally fun. There is a Sophora a little under an hour away from her in a mall with lots of great places to eat so I suggested that but she said she thought we could go to Macy's which is closer because Clinique has some free give away with a purchase of $25. Am I wrong in thinking Clinique is old lady make up? Is there anything there or at another counter in Macy's you guys would recommend or should I push for Sophora?
I use Clinique foundation and I don't think I am old
I have used their mascara in the past, and their black honey lip color is awesome.
OK, good, I think I got that idea because the few people I know who talk about buying make up there in my office are in their 50's. We will have fun either way!
I don't think of Clinique as being "old lady." I think of it as more a younger brand. That's the first brand I bought when I was a teenager and in college.
I use Clinique Laser Focus foundation and High Impact mascara and like both a lot. I think the old-lady reputation is because it's been around a long time. But my mom and aunts do use Clinique, so lol. But I think they've done a better job of staying modern than, say, Estee Lauder, so there should be plenty for your SIL to choose from. Anyway, if this is her gift, and she's the one who wants to go there, then there's really no question.
Macy's should also have Bobbi Brown, MAC, Chanel, etc. in case either of you want to branch out. They won't have as much variety as Nordstrom or Saks or Sephora, but there should be enough to at least browse a bit.

I have a friend who is an executive with EL, the parent company.
The original marketing strategy/target audience for Clinique was actually 20 somethings. It was to be the gateway drug for their higher end, more mature lines.
Many of their initial products were aimed at troubled and acne prone young skin- their alcohol based toners and pore minimizer line for instance. What happened was that as younger women aged, they were reluctant to leave the line. Estee Launder was a mom/grannie line and women weren't comfortable going there at 30. Especially given that many EL foundations were Clinique dupes but heavily fragranced and more expensive. EL co. responded by creating Prescriptives for more sophisticated 30-somethings. Prescriptives did wean some away from Clinique, but wasn't fully able to compete, especially when the company acquired Bobbi Brown and MAC. Pity, I miss their custom foundation colors.
There is still a core of Clinique diehards who have never switched and the company has wisely tweaked their line to accommodate the skin care needs of the 50-60+ crowd who first bought the line. FWIW, the gift w/purchase is a really nice one right now.

That is interesting! We went yesterday, the free gift was great. My sister got eye shadow, blush and eye liner and the free gift had mascara in it so she got a good makeup base. I got the eye makeup remover because it looked good and I hate the one I was using. I also got the mascara but later saw the same one came in the gift so I might go back and exchange it for a lipstick. Thanks guys.
The high impact mascara? That stuff is my favorite! It may be worth keeping it as a back up.
No, the one in the gift is Lash Doubling Mascara, and I don't like it nearly as much as High Impact. krisandgrace, I would try the gift one first and see if you like it. If not, I (and apparently a few others in this post!) recommend High Impact. I'm glad your shopping day was fun and productive!

Yep, the High Impact is the one that I have and love.

Well, I lucked out because they ran out of the original free gift so they put together a few items for the gift. There was less then the original gift but the mascara was the High Impact, I totally love it!
I love Clinique. Black Honey has always been my favorite lipstick. I also use their foundation, face wash and moisturizer.
I forgot about Black Honey! I love it too. I didn't really wear it much this summer (although it's suitable year round IMO). I'll have to get it out for fall and winter.
