I'll hop on this train, too. My now-14yo was completely silent at 2 (not so much as even a vroom vroom when he played with cars) and we had him evaluated and while he did require some speech therapy he now Won't. Shut. Up. Oh my God. He never shuts up.
Oh, and his first word was (I can't type it) "f*ckhead". How proud was I?

DS was like this. At 21 mos we took him in for an eval as he only spoke 5 words. The next week his language exploded, maybe he realized the jig was up!
At 18 months DD had one word, and the (crazy ADD) pedi we saw was all, "EI, teach her to talk, blah blah". I saw another dr a month later and DD already had 10 words. That dr said she didn't start to get concerned until at least 2.
DS got referred to EI at 14 mos. He has been in speech therapy and has been getting it twice a week since about 16 mos. He's done very well, but still has articulation issues.
Thank you for this post! DD was evaluated for SLP through EI about 3 mos before her 2nd birthday and again about 3 mos afterwards. She didn't qualify for services. They said that basically she is just a late talker and will talk when she's ready, but otherwise everything is fine. He language skills are continuing to develop so I'm no longer worried.
I didn't speak at all at 2 and was in speech therapy from age 3 to 6. By the time I was in 3rd or 4th grade, there is no way you would have believed that I was a late talker.
Thanks for this post. DD qualified for speech and OT at 16 months. She's "graduating" from OT next week and she's recently made HUGE progress with speech. It's so interesting what they evaluate. DD actually had a (very) few words at 16 months, but she wasn't doing other things (like pointing) with expressive communication. Speech therapy has been a great experience for both of us - I've learned a lot.
DS is 18mo. He says "mama, dada, ball, ca (cat), da (dog)." He signs the typical "more & all-done." We're not concerned since he can point to 10 body parts (his/others) & multiple animals/items in his books. We talk out loud all day. He can point on his body to where he's hurt (ie: teething pain). He can say "moo & woof" and makes "vroom" noises when playing with cars.
Pedi (LOVE her, but no kids) has suggested a Speech Path consult in a few months since he;s not at the "textbook" 6-10 words by now. DH & I aren't worried. We don't mind the silence.
ETA: DS is very outgoing towards adults & kiddos. He is the typical "loud" toddler boy- always going, giving hugs to others/dolls, throwing balls, racing cars, running/screeching while pushing a toy.

I'm certainly not a doctor, but that seems a little aggressive for that age. I was told that their understanding is more important than expressive in that 1-2 age group. DD never had 6-10 words anyway. She pretty much woke up one day and started speaking a bunch of words in small sentences. It wasn't a gradual thing at all.
