I get that stores have to compete with the internet, and they're doing it because some people will shop on Thanksgiving Day. And when I didn't have family obligations, I was happy to work on holidays.
But unless they're making it optional for people who do have families - which you can bet your boots they're not, because retail employees are easily replaced - and paying those who work holiday pay, I can't agree with this practice. So I won't be shopping at any stores that open on Thursday - all year long.
This sounds rather pretentious, but whatever floats your boat dude.
It's easy to get all worked up about something on a message board and then fail to have follow through b/c it's going to inconvience you a few months/weeks down the road.
I can't get it up over this. What about nurses? They work plenty of holidays, even Christmas! Do we close down the hospitals, because they need to spend time with their families? Most people know at this point, that taking retail jobs holidays will be included.

Not a good comparison. Emergency staff is a necessity. Jcpenney is not.

I am sure, in just a few short years, scientists will figure out a way to stop the earth's rotation briefly on Thanksgiving so stores can stay open for 27 hours in one day.
no, but really. no one is forcing anyone to work where they work. most of us keep our jobs b/c we don't have another, BETTER, option. myself included. i know it sucks to have a holiday ruined b/c a member of your family now has to work, but, i don't know that it necessitates all this boycotting and rage and whatever other threats are being made in this thread.
plenty of people work holidays. i come from a family of nurses. we have had t-days, easters and christmases on alternate days before and i just don't see how this is different.
Nurses get paid good money to come and work on a holiday. And not every single one is needed to work that day either.

killercupcake, it is unacceptable for you to be upset about this. It's just capitalism!
Also, I had to work on thanksgiving in college once so what's the big deal?!?
If you only knew. I was away for my family on the holidays for several years, because I was in the military and on deployment. So really, don't go there.

Ummm yeah. And some would say the same about retail workers too. It may not be good money to you, but it would be to others. I'm sure that not every single JcPenney employee is required to work either. My cousin works at Target. I believe she said they are opening at 8 and she doesn't have to work. And I'd like to see the boycotters of ALL the stores that open early on Thanksgiving to boycott Target. Not happening.

it's all relative. someone cleaning out the fry bin or working as a nurse's aid (in my area, this is an unregulated profession where they make less than minimum wage) might be ecstatic to have a retail job, even if it meant working thanksgiving.
