I work retail. My company hasn't decided what they are going to do yet, but with the mall anchors opening early, usually the rest/most of the mall follows or the mall forces the stores open early. If the rest of the mall is opening then it is missed business to be closed. Most customers will shop multiple malls and areas. I am in a big city, and all 3 major malls offer something unique.
I was unhappy about midnight openings and very unhappy. Holiday is an exhausting hellish season. I have missed seeing family thanksgiving for the past 3 years because I just can't make the drive anymore and still work a 16 hour day. It is just too exhausting.
I have been using the day to relax and rest for what I know to be an intense next 2 months.
Who wants to shop in the middle of the night unless it is online?
Stupid stupid JCP.
I haven't hit a black friday sale in probably more than a decade. Fuck that noise. I don't need it in the first place and fuck if I want to wrastle for it.
lmfao at "open for 35 hours". People are way way wrongly-prioritized.
once upon a time, stores were closed on sundays. it's just life and the progression of the modern world.
i quoted you - but it's not directed at you really. more directed at the boycott crazies.
It seems like it is a corporate-directed progression booby. I think last year more customers were upset about the Thanksgiving opening than were for it. It is these huge huge companies having to open up earlier than the next guy to get the most business. Not really a better situation for the customers or the employees. This change really doesn't have to be inevitable.
killercupcake - Again I'm sorry your mom has to work.
Can you follow up with her on this and update. I'm curious to see her account of if it's busy or not on the actual date of Thanksgiving. I hope for her sake it's not and that she gets some extra pay, albeit she's missing an important day for your family, and that it's fairly quiet.
I am a hotel Manager. I will be at work on Thanksgiving (though only for a few hours and just to check on my employees). I will also be working Christmas Eve during the day. I won't come up on Christmas though (the GM does that).
But I knew going into this job that hotel are a 24hr a day, 365 days a year kind of operation.
I don't think that JCP retail associates knew they would be working holidays.

Do your employees get paid much extra during the holidays laz? That is nice that you get Christmas off. It is hard for the employees at my work on Thanksgiving since many won't be able to attend a dinner since we are open so early. I hope you get to celebrate T-day with your family at home. Can your employees work a regular shift on the holidays or shorter ones if possible?
lol, this is almost the EXACT same thread as the other day. Rehashing the whoooole thing all over again.
And I think it's shitty for sure. It will be really easy for me to not shop at JCP because I never did in the first place. I did laugh at "exploitation" though. Too much!

It is the exact same thread you could replace jcp with macys and you would be on. Except there was more people against t-day opening on that thread. We seem to have lost some people and gained ones that were weirdly too strong on it with the boycott all year and exploitation stuff.

No extra pay (our benefits package is not set up that way) but I do have the kitchen make a complete holiday meal for everyone working and I get starbucks gift cards for anyone who works the holidays.
I do stagger their shifts. So normally they work 8 hr shifts, I break them up into 4 hour shifts instead. It works pretty good and people with kids - I give them the morning off and the younger ones get the evenings off that way.
It works ok. In the hospitality industry we all know we have to work. It is what it is.
lol b/c in the thread the other day, someone suggested going to see a movie on Tgiving day instead of black friday shopping. Think of the theater employees!
Yup. What about them!!!!
And I want to say we opened for 4pm movies. Bigger theaters were open all day
Hasn't Kmart always been open on TG? And drugstores? Grocery stores. Bah humbug to all
Kmart is open every day but Christmas. Then (at least my old store) would take two volunteers who wanted to stock on Christmas for an extra shift on Christmas day.
