If JCP & Macy's are evil for opening on Thanksgiving

what about grocery stores, McD's and other restaurants, drug stores, and similar places that are also open?

Is the outrage only at the department stores?

It's a rare occurrence that I get thanksgiving off. Most of them I have had to work.

One of the things that is a part of our contract negotiations is that the companies want to remove our extra pay for working holidays and being away from our families.

This is millions of people that used to be able to enjoy Thanksgiving on the actual day, but now all these stores need to one up each other to get the most business.

I will only say, per one hellish experience at the ILs, thank heavens the local Walgreens was open at midnight on Thanksgiving night because that is where I purchased the items to create a semblance of a Thnksgivimg dinner after MIL insisted she host and cook everything for the holiday....

Honestly I think that we should go back to the days of stores closing on major holidays. I dread working some holidays because we get some of the rudest customers those days.

There are a ton of people who don't like these stores open on Thanksgiving. Customers and employees both. It was more a corporate decision to one up each other and it gets more and more out of hand every passing year.

I think she's saying no one seems to be upset about the places she mentioned (McD's etc). But for some reason a lot of the public is outraged that JCP and Macy's are open. 

ie) why is it ok for some places to open and not others, etc. etc.

When I worked in a restaurant for Thanksgiving I knew that they were open for Thanksgiving. Food estalishments, gas stations, hospitals, and law enforcement (I'm probably missing something) are professions that I would go into expecting to work holidays.

Retail sales is not a profession I would go in to expecting to work holidays.

I believe that these stores are preying on the fears of so many people by opening earlier and with bigger sales, especially in this economy. There's people who shop solely on Black Friday as a way to get everyone a gift and spend far less than waiting 2 weeks after T-giving and not being able to afford everyone something, KWIM? Grocery stores, McDs, drug stores, most usually take the high road and tend to close early, like around 4-6, maybe 7. This is the big retailers' way of prying money out of customers by instilling a sense of fear into them. I have a feeling that if more and more businesses start opening on T-giving, then it's no longer going to become a holiday and there goes another day that the majority of people can have off and share their time with family and friends.

My wife's restaurant (she manages doesn't own) is open and she always has to work. She hates it and I fucking hate it. We have no family up here so I'm always forced to find a generous friend to host me. Luckily I have awesome friends. When we finally do open our own place we will NOT be open on Thanksgiving

I think people are more upset that JCP and Macy's expect shoppers will leave their families and shop on Thanksgiving. Not so much that they're open. I bet some who usually catch the Black Friday Sales and are bargain shoppers are annoyed they now have to go in on Thanksgiving and on Friday. Or are upset that they will be losing out on deals because they're choosing to stay with families and not shop.

There will be people who go, I'm sure.

I used to work at McD's as well as a grocery store. I worked at both places on a Thanksgiving it's super slow!!!

Are all Mcdonalds actually open on t-day? Probably not. It probably is not a very busy day at the Mcds that day. Not every single employee needs to report that day. Some can have it off. When you open up these big box stores for these big huge sales it takes a ton of employees to run the store. All hands on deck, and people have to come in twice in 24 hours during the busiest shopping days of the year. Keep in mind retail runs with as little employees as possible, stores are understaffed to make sure of profitability it is very very stressful.

I don't think they should be open on Thanksgiving, I just don't care if they are.

Oh, and some people need to have restaurants/McD's open. Because their family dinner sucks and they stop for food on the way home. Like if I went to my mom's for dinner. Seriously. Last year she made salmon for Thanksgiving. SALMON!

The store I work at is 5am-1am everyday of the year but Christmas Eve (we close at 7pm) and Christmas Day (open 8am to 5pm). The other grocery store on the island is closed.

I don't understand. You mean Xmas but not July 4th? I worked plenty of holidays when I worked retail ( not including the movie theatre ) .... Damn theatre was always open

Yes Christmas.  It's what I've been exposed to, I guess.  And it's odd, but I've always known theatres to be open 365 days a year so that's the norm to me.  

I'm not saying I agree with this, it's just what I'm used to. I do always appreciate the grocery stores being open on major holidays because I inevitably forget something.

His have some compassion towards these lowly retail folks. The holiday season is stressful and hectic. Thanksgiving was a day we had off until very recently. This change affects millions of workers who really don't get much incentive for it. Just because these other guys are open doesn't make if right. Life isn't fair but really who needs Best buy or kmart or target on thanksgiving. Why?

But it seems that each year the store opening time is getting earlier. I remember when the majority of stores opened at like 5am the day after Thanksgiving.  Then it went to midnight being the time for several years and now the majority are going earlier, encroaching on the actual Thanksgiving holiday. Not cool.

One day to rest up for the biggest day, black friday.  We had thanksgiving off at my big box store three or four years ago, it is still a very recent change.
