Last night the girls were playing out front and so were some kids next door. All of a sudden a dog from down the street rushes out the front door and goes straight for the group of kids next door, biting the leg of one of the girls before anyone could do anything.
We grabbed our girls and ran them inside then DH went out to try to help.
The girl had a pretty bad bite that required stitches. Dog is being put down.
I keep thinking about how it could have been one of my kids. We've been scared of this dog for a while. It's aggressive and they seemed oblivious to it. Even as we were trying to get things sorted out last night the owner was saying how nice the dog is. They also have a doxie that is aggressive and mean that nips at your feet whenever it gets out, which is often. I think they are just bad dog owners.
I feel bad for the dog only because if his owners weren't so shitty, he might have been a great dog. It doesn't sound like these people should have any dogs.

That really, really sucks.
I'm not sure I'd jump right to the "horrible dog owners" statement though, especially if the dog was able to get out from being inside. I have two dog aggressive dogs and take all the precautions I can to make sure they don't get out, but it has happened a couple of times. I've just been fortunate that nothing serious has ever happened. I'd be devastated if someone ever got hurt by them.
We had to give our rescue border collie mix to my in-laws for this reason. Sweet as can be dog. Very loyal and smart. But if any neighborhood children came near our house he would attack the door and scare the hell out of them. One day he broke the whole latch off of the glass door and ran out and started nipping at kids' backs causing panic on everyone's part. Even though he didn't do any damage, I couldn't have a territorial dog scaring little ones (and we have two kids he just adores).
Not the same exactly, but my mom got bit by a dog while out running the other day. She went back to tell the owner what happened, but they weren't home and a neighbor informed her this wasn't the first time the dog had been aggressive and bitten someone. Instead she went home and filed police report. The cops went and talked to the owner and told them if the dog was caught roaming free again, there would be consequences.
I hate when people don't keep control of their dogs, especially if they are known to be aggressive-like.

But that's really what makes these people bad owners and you not, you wouldn't be there saying "I don't know how this happened, they're not usually like this!" like it sounds like these people were. Owners in denial about what their dog is like are bad owners.
the OP is awful and sad, but this post combined with your sig pic is hilarious. it's like it used to be a sweet picture of a baby and a puppy, but now it looks like a dog picking out a new chew toy. LOL!
Our dog is not aggressive towards us or the baby and I was sitting right there watching him. He actually is afraid of her and runs away anytime he is near her. He will be near her for like 15 seconds and then escape. We were really worried about how he would be with her but we've been pleasantly surprised. Having said that we are still very careful and watchful. You just never know.
I read it as teasing frkls, although given some posts in the past I can see why V felt the need to clarify
V, your dog sounds like my cat. I'd like to say that he's 14 and arthritic but he's always been a grumpy old thing who has no use for other people. But he's intrigued by the baby and even tried to get close. That doesn't last long though because she gets excited and it's either fists and feet flailing or a high pitched excited shriek - neither one is on the list of things the cat wants to be near
I watch them closely but I think until she's older he's going to tolerate a fair amount that the rest of us would never be able to attempt.
