I'd like to hear what other people thought of it....it seems that those who've seen it are divided and most critics disliked it. I've got my opinion (I'll share later), what's yours?
The studio screwed themselves by casting Tom Cruise. There are lots of other actors who would have been well qualified for the role and would have brought in a larger crowd.
It's a shame... it's probably a good movie, but a lot of people won't see it just because crazy-man is in it. I'm one of them. I still love that era in music and I refuse to let Tom Cruise ruin GNR, Motley Crue, Poison, etc for me.

I'm not a Tom Cruise fan, but he made the movie bearable. He was pretty funny in that role and did a good job. I think Cruise and two unknowns as the main character hurt the movie (the unknowns sucked). It's just ok, and it was way too long. At least I got to see it for free!

Are you talking about Julianne Hough (or however you spell it.)? She's not really an "unknown" but yes, she sucked. I was fully expecting her to suck, her music career be damned. I've never thought she was even remotely good at singing.
I haven't seen it, but I did just see the show on Broadway after not really knowing what to expect. I have to say that I'm not surprised the movie didn't do well. The entire plot is just kind of lacking, honestly (which is something the narrator acknowledges). And the lead boy and girl are blah, even in the show. The music is what makes it, so I guess if you can just enjoy it based on that, then it's fun.

I've heard that the musical was mostly "fun" and wasn't anything life changing or anything, but that the music was at least executed well.
I thought the movie would be the same...but BOY was I wrong. It was so bad that it crossed over into the "funny" category....as in, how much worse can it get? Why don't we just show you!! We (and the rest of us in the theater) groaned and laughed openly at parts that were clearly not meant to be funny.
Tom Cruise's crazy doesn't bother me (though I'm generally not a "fan") but he's been decent in other comedies, so I had hope. Up until his character appeared, I wasn't entirely sure if they meant the movie to be a satire or not. I'm not sure whose idea it was for the dragon cod-piece, but that was one of the only true laughable moments.
Having Mary J. Blige in the movie didn't help because she can actually sing. No one else in the movie could (I didn't mind CZJ's voice in Chicago but they auto-tuned it so badly in this movie it sounded like someone else). I loved Julianna Hough when she was on DWTS, but DANG.....
And I'm sorry, but the "love story" between Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand...lame. Sorry for the "spoiler".
The only saving grace was that we could sing along with the songs loud enough to drown out the actual singing. And I'll admit that I liked the arrangement of "We're not gonna take it" and "We Built this City". Execution wasn't good, but the arrangement was a winner for me. They DEFINITELY could have brought in some of the actual hair bands or actual 80s stars for some better cameos and/or smarter satire.
I haven't seen it but my SIL saw the musical on broadway and the movie. Her comment was "I hope the movie doesn't close the broadway show" She said the movie was almost like a parody of itself. That the musical isn't like that and she was really dissapointed in the movie.
TC was the draw for me. I like when he steps outside his action hero box. I'm not necessarily a fan of his personal choices (Scientology) but I love him as an actor. I thought the movie was fun but my husband hated it.
