I usually stay home, but DH does sometimes as well. My in-laws often fill in for more prolonged illnesses and I have hired a temp nanny if my kid is out for say a week. With my older kid it is much easier. I let her watch a move when she sick and then we hang and maybe have lunch and then she naps.

DH and I take turns staying home. A few times when DD was little and well, just hadn't been fever-free for long enough to go back to school, my dad stayed. But if they are really sick and need comfort, DH or I handle it.
Jake and I switch off (though when he takes a day, it means I pack up the kid/kids and drive into the city, then he drives back home and drops me off at work on the way).
I wish we had a backup sitter, but those are more expensive and we have to pay for the daycare whether they go or not. Can't afford it suddenly.
It depends. If it is something not contagious, MIL will sometimes watch them, or my mom if we are in a jam. If it is contagious, DH and I take turns. I just don't feel comfortable asking someone other than us to catch a stomach bug so that I can go to work.
This morning H stayed home, and I took half a day to relieve him of duty so he could get a few hours of work in before he has to go observe third shift this evening. He's able to get some work done from home, but I'm really apprehensive to take time off this being my seventh day at the new job and all. I've been toying with the idea of finding someone who would be willing to be an on-call sitter since we have no family in the area.

DH and I take turns. It is usually a last minute - what's on your plate at work today and who can swing a last minute notice day off. But we do try to be fair about taking turns.
