This is going to make me sound very naive, but is an employer required to give you a pay stub when taxes are being taken out? I have direct deposit and always have at this job because I was never given the option of receiving a paper check. I got paid today and my check is not at all what I was expecting. It seems much too low. The amount of money that would have to have been taken out in taxes for this to be accurate is obscene. I guess I had never thought about it before since we had two incomes but now that it's just me I'm noticing it.
Then I started thinking that I will need to be able to provide proof of income when I eventually start looking for somewhere to live. I'm going to email my boss and request the last 6 months be given to me, but is it even legal to withhold something like that?

At my job, if you have direct deposit, you get everything electronically. There's a website you log into to see your pay stub, the breakdown of withholdings, etc. but you also have the option to opt out of that at any time and get a paper version instead. Is it possible your job has something like that but you just never got the log-in info?
How do they issue your W-2s for taxes? My pay stubs and tax documentation are all together online. Assuming you work for a decent-sized company, even a legit small business, I'm sure your pay stubs are somewhere, and I can't think of any reason they'd be withheld from you....

I started at this job after taxes were filed so this hasn't come up yet.

Do you have an HR or Payroll dept? I would start there and ask them how you are supposed to obtain this information. And yes, they are required to provide it to you.
This happened to me at my old job, they forgot to give me web access to my pay stubs. Just ask.
This happens at my office all the time. HR shouldn't have a problem with you asking.
Also, when you filled out your paperwork, what did you claim? If you claimed 0, A LOT could be taken out of your check. Like a surprisingly large amount.
