Those pictures dont look shocking to me, but it's clear that smoking has had an impact. What's truly shocking is how old a younger person can look after smoking for years. I have an acquaintance who has been smoking since her teens and is in her mid-30s and she easily looks 50.

my dad pointed this out to me about one of the sets of twins in his family; the sister smoked and the brother didn't, and she looked EASILY fifteen years older.
My mom is 58 and looks about 68. My dad is 57 and because of heavy drinking looks around 70. People wonder why I don't smoke and hardly ever drink. I haven't aged at all since I was 15/16.
I had this internship with a court ordered group therapy organization. One of the members came in and said "its my birthday! I'm 40 now!". He easily looked 65-70. He was an alcoholic and I think that does WAY more damage than cigarettes. I could not believe he was 40. I checked his file after therapy because I thought he was pulling my leg.
DH and I had house guests from France a few weeks ago; they were colleagues of DH's we hadn't seen in 8 years. They have always smoked and sort of mock the American rules against. They were, for instance, appalled that you can't smoke in bars or in the patio area of a restaurant since this has changed in the 20 years since they lived here.
We went to the airport of collect them and DH not only didn't recognize them, he swore he thought I was kidding when I pointed to the old wrinkled people I thought might be them. It was them. My niece swore they looked old enough to be my parents when we're about the same age.
