I started to notice that when I eat breakfast I have more trouble starting my day (and I am really not a morning person). I eat a light breakfast, like yogurt or some soy milk with cereal. Yet, I often feel tired in the morning. When I don't eat it seems better. How weird is that? I usually eat my breakfast around 8am. Maybe I should just have it later? I do believe having breakfast is a good thing.
Strange. I find that when we have a "power breakfast" (scrambled eggs with carrots with fresh fruit and soy yogurt, bit of honey maybe) that we all tend to have a pretty good day. I'm not that hungry until lunch and am very productive on those mornings. Same with DH and the girls. On days that I don't make that breakfast and we just have toast or something (or nothing) we're barely productive at all.
I also find that if I have a full breakfast, like eggs, hashbrowns, toast and tomatoes - that I feel tired and sluggish.
And if I just have a banana or something, god help those around me by 11am.
I don't know the science behind it but if you eat a carb rich breakfast you will most likely be tired and hungry. Carbs turn to glucose in your system quickly and that makes your blood sugar spike, then fall. Which is why most need a snack around 9/10 am before lunch. I have been reading a lot on carbs vs protein and learned a great deal from the book "Wheat Belly" --

This explains so much! We eat carb heavy and I am always sluggish and starving by 10. I am going to change starting tomorrow!
This sounds pretty DUH but it took me a good 25 years to figure it out.
When I wake up what I need is water. I am not a breakfast eater, but when my body starts screaming for coffee or food, I give it water and all is right with the world.
Try it. I drink 2 glasses of water in the morning before I have my coffee, and it tides me over until lunch. I feel like all around general ass if I don't get my money water.
If I eat just carbs I'm starving all day and end up eating junk. I started eating an egg, whole wheat toast, yogurt and a fruit for breakfast and I last until a late lunch.
Just carbs for breakfast is terrible. I never understand how people here eat only croissants or bread with jam for breakfast, aren't they ready to kill someone by 12?!
I need protein in the morning, usually I have toast w/pb or toast w/an egg white omelet. I really love yogurt with granola but its too hard to eat at work (I have to be at work by 7:45, so I never eat before I go).
Sometimes I just have juice for breakfast and feel like I'm full of energy but its just the sugar high. By 10:30/11 I'm ravenous.
I feel like I go to long between breakfast and lunch though and usually eat a huge lunch because I'm starving. I eat breakfast at 8 and don't get my lunch break til nearly 1 and usually don't eat til 115/130. :-(.

For me, protein in the morning is the way to go. Breakfast is usually an egg and cheese on one slice of bread, and houmous. Or, sometimes greek yoghurt with fruit, and a hard boiled egg. There's usually an egg or two involved. I love eggs.
If I eat breakfast, it's always carbs and it doesn't make me tired or sluggish. It's always healthy whole wheat multi grain and no sugary stuff though. Good carbs are good!

Thank you all for making me crave scrambled eggs with cheese.
Here in the US, I usually eat cereal for breakfast and am starving by 10:00. In Germany, I usually eat toast with peanut butter (and, ahem, often some nutella) and am starving by 10:00. For a while I tried making eggs with veggies and a bit of feta cheese and was starving by 10:00, sometimes I made it to 10:30 without a snack, though.
So... for me it doesn't seem to matter, but woe is anyone within a mile radius of me if I have to skip a meal. I get pretty nasty when my blood sugar is low.

Yesterday I had toast and eggs instead of my obnoxiously large bowl of sugar cereal. I was still hungry at my usual morning snack time BUT I wasn't sluggish. In fact, I had more energy than usual.
In all fairness, it's better to eat in the morning in general than later in the day...I'm a believer in breakfast, morning snack, lunch...afternoon snack and virtually no dinner.
I'm slow to get hungry when I wake up but I need breakfast and also I tend to eat lunch earlier in the day because it makes me much more productive.
Breakfast on work days is normally nut-based granola and yogurt, so yeah, high on protein. On weekends, I love a proper English or American breakfast with eggs and bacon, I don't eat that too often though. I like things like French toast and eggs benedict as well sometimes. I never find that breakfast makes me sluggish. I do find that if I don't eat enough, I become a ravenous, distractable person who is no use to anyone until lunch. If that happens, the lunch happens as soon as possible. Sometimes I can eat very lightly and be fine. I'm definitely in the "eat when hungry" school.
