Liver infection in dogs?

Sunday I noticed that our 9 year old lab mix was acting a little off. He had no interest in snuggling, and when I went to give him dinner last night I saw he hadn't eaten Monday's breakfast.  When he still hadn't eaten the same bowl of food this morning I took him to the vet.  They did a blood draw and found that the levels indicating a problem with the liver were elevated (think it was either ALT or AST, can't remember). 

They gave him an antibiotics shot and sent us home with pill-form antibiotics and prednisone, with orders to call if he isn't back to normal in 3 days.  They hope it's just an infection, but if he doesn't improve it could be a sign of something more serious. 

Anyone have experience with this?
