So yesterday was my first 5K ever, and I finished it in 34.44, with all three miles being right around 11:11. I have never run a mile under 15 minutes. It was actually really awesome, and I am now looking for another race. I never thought I would actually enjoy running. It was an absolute blast though!!
And Darkling (and anyone else contemplating doing the Couch to 5K, I say dooo itt!! It made a non-runner like me into actually being able run and enjoy it. If it can work for me, it can work for anyone!!
And also, I saw this on postsecret this morning, and thought of you all! Happy Monday!!
Congrats on your first 5k, that's a great accomplishment!
Just to reiterate on the C25K program, I completed it 5 years ago now and it literally changed my life. I was never, ever a runner before that, now I've finished upwards of 60 races of varying distances, including two full marathons. Running has now become a part of my life.
If I can do it, anyone can, seriously. It really is a great program.

holy moly, you just made me feel like the laziest sonofabitch ever. I wish I had your drive!
For me, it's way too hot to be running around down here for no good reason. Right now it's not too bad but when July/August comes around I just cannot understand how people do that everyday in this hot and humid place.

I'm too princess to run around outside. It's far too hot. When did the c25k program I did it solely on treadmill and had absolutely no intentions of doing it outside for a marathon.

I kind of think it's silly to pay to run.
I agree with this to an extent, though that's why I did a smaller race for charity, where the money all goes to help parent's with kid's with lukemia pay for things like food, gas, etc. since so much money is being spent on treatments, that the normal day-to-day expenses can get forgotten.

Yep, so far the 5Ks I've done (with the exception of the Zombie Run) were all for charities. Plus they feed you at the end of the race and a lot of times you get nice shirts and goodie bags.

Yup to all of this!! And the goodie bag was cool because it had a bunch of coupons in it, and some seeds for flowers, and seeds for bell peppers. It was cool, and enviormentally friendly, lol!
*Most* races do support some kind of local charity, so that's why I usually don't mind paying. And around here at least, they're not very expensive for the shorter races, under $30 usually. Once you get into the longer distances, the costs do go up.
IMO races are addicting. I usually run by myself, so races are a good way to run with other people, and you can't really describe the adrenaline you feel while racing unless you've done it. Somehow you're able to go longer and harder than you ever would when you run by yourself. Anyway, I never win, I'm a mid packer at best, but it's fun to have total strangers cheering you on and accomplishing something you didn't think you could. Plus, I always wanted to be an olympian when I was young, but was never good enough at anything to accomplish that. This is my way to kind of fulfill that dream, if that makes sense.
I do agree about the heat though, it's a total run killer, so I usually plan my longer distance races for the spring or fall when it's not as hot. I hate the treadmill, so in the summer I stick to shorter runs and try to go out at the coolest possible part of the day.
