I hated how Carrie could always turn someone else's situation into a conversation about her. "That reminds me of ME!" And how everyone fawned over her and cared so much about her stupid life. Move to Paris, don't move to Paris, I don't care.
It also pissed me off how Big's moment of hesitation in the first movie was this huge betrayal. And how Miranda should forgive Steve for cheating on her, but how Carrie should never ever forgive Big because he was just AWFUL.
Yes! Like, really? He got nervous for like 5 mintues and you thought it was okay to beat him with your bouquet and call off the wedding? Really?
But she was wearing a bird on her head!
No hesitations allowed when your bride's veil is serving as a nest.

Right? They should have just had him not show up at all and leave her at the altar. It would have been easier to understand the FUCK BIG vitriol.

When they were making SATC2 (or whenever there is any really sucky movie), I always wonder if the actors are eating lunch and someone just says out loud that the movie is a huge piece of crap. And then do they all start laughing, because they know, but who cares?
I heard they are moving forward with an "Entourage" movie, so I am sure those guys will all be yukking it up together too, knowing they get to cash in one more time with a sucky film.
What strikes me now about SATC is how quaint the technology seems, even though such a relatively short period of time has passed. Carrie almost looks like Doogie Howser writing her column.
I LOVE this show - still do and will watch it whenver it's on.
I think the writing was smart. I also think it touched on a lot of topics of 30-something single women (do you WANT children or do you want them simply because you are told you want them, etc.)
And the anal sex episode from an early season is truly hysterical.
I love this show, and a lot of the writing is really clever. Carrie is insufferable though. And I like to pretend that the second movie didn't happen.
I think the thing that bothered me most about the whole series/movies is when Samantha tells Smith that she loves him, but she loves herself more. I don't mind the line, but she used that line on Richard. It was perfect on Richard and I loved it. Using it a second time ruined it for me.
Ok ok it looks like this is one of those things (books, movies, songs) where..depending on your own life experiences then and (more importantly) since then....you feel differently as you recall the characters?
But let's get one thing clear. It was not a 5 second hesitation with big. More like a 10 yr hesitation, and the bouquet beatdown was totes apropos
I will always love this show, flaws and all. I was never an Aiden fan.
I didn't like Aiden for her either. He was too good for her.
I always thought she should end up with big.
However. She probably deserved Alexander. They were equally assholes.
Ugh. I hate the last episodes with him - it was just so random and they had NO chemistry and then she upends her life in NY for him? For a dude you have no chemistry with?
And Aidan just wasn't right for her - Berger was until he became an asshole, but Aidan never was. I mean, he liked to eat KFC from a bucket on Saturday nights while she went to gay bars!
Carrie is a fucking bitch. She cheats on Aiden, and then insists on keeping Big in her life, while being bitterly jealous when he so much as looks at that bartender.
Unbelievably, Natasha finds her in her and Big's apartment, and she runs off, and Natasha's tooth is chipped in a fall, and Carrie INSISTS on stalking her to tell her how lousy she feels for what it is she's done, fucking her husband in her bed in her apartment while she's on a trip to the Hamptons. GOD I hate her.
I HATE her.
Wait, what??? Carrie slept with Big while he was married to someone else?? How'd I miss that one?
I was, however, jealous of the fact that she got to bang with Baryshnikov.
Fixed that for you.
The worst part about the second movie is what they did to Aidan's character. He was one of the few characters on the entire show with a moral compass, and then they have him cheat on his wife & three kids? Don't buy it and am surprised that John Corbett signed up (actually, he's the voice guy for Applebee's, maybe I shouldn't be surprised at all....)

Out of all the things to hate about the second movie, that is what I hated most. Or maybe it was the "Lawrence of my labia" line. It's a toss-up, I guess.
Ha! Yeah, vanillacourage, so true. I'd put him on my laminated list.
So I should be glad I haven't seen the second movie, yes? (Wasn't Aiden the one she was engaged to in the series, but wore the ring on a chain because she didn't like the symbolism or something?)
I always hated this show and could never understand all the SATC love. Carrie is whiny and makes the worst choices in the world. Why did so many people think she was wonderful?
I think she had the appeal because she was the main character and people were obsessed with the fashion.
I don't think her character was supposed to always be loveable though. It's somewhat like the Girls tv show. The main characters aren't all supposed to be people you admire, but rather the main characters are more complex. You don't have to like them, but perhaps you watch because they remind you of situations or people you know IRL.

Yes, except that it was because she didn't really want to marry him and was stringing him along like a BITCH. Small correction.

I was obsessed when I was in college. We'd have viewing parties and drink cosmos.
Now, I see how insufferable Carrie was. I'll be honest, I always thought Miranda and Samantha were horrible actresses (everything seemed like over the top soap opera acting), but now I see how bad Carrie was too.
I'll also add that they dressed Samantha like she was stuck in the 80's.
Did anyone see the second movie? Seeing that was one of the most uncomfortable situations I've been in. I felt embarrassed for them the entire time. Ugh.
I watched the second movie on a long flight and was genuinely embarassed to be watching it. So bad.

Lol. I was *trying* to put a positive spin on it, but your version is much closer to how I saw it, too!
What Carrie did to Aiden was awful and I have hated her since. It was so lousy and he was clearly the better choice, the hunky, hot furniture maker with the great cabin in the country (that she hated).
I also always hated almost everything she wore. Never understood how people raved about her fashion.
I did enjoy the show overall though. I liked Samantha because at least she was really out there with who she was and I thought that was cool.
Ah, yes. Black bras under white shirts. Another thing to thank the show for!
I saw a lot of people do this in the '90's before the show. Luckily, I don't think the show ever made it cool. The people who were doing it before were just clueless, not trying to make a fashion statement.
I used to love the show, especially the fact that embarrassing things happened to all the main characters, like Samantha with the fake Fendi purse, and Carrie getting caught snooping in a boyfriend's place. You cringe at them, but at the same time, they make the women seem more realistic, somehow.
Now having rewatched a few episodes, I just don't get the appeal anymore. The fashion is over the top and Carrie especially seems to try too hard.
eta: I never understood the relationship between Carrie and Big. That's gotta be one of the most shallow romance in all tv history, despite all the drama surrounding it.

I saw SATC2 right when it came out. Throughout this whole thread, I've been trying to remember the horrible storyline. I honestly can't, even with these posts. I think I effectively banished it from my mind.
I was, however, jealous of the fact that she got to bang with Baryshnikov.
