Why didn't they just kill Hattie off or have her run off and get married or something? They just let her putter off when they could have made it a dramatic storyline.
I actually really like this season, but it's not about parenthood, it's about relationships. I love Julia's storyline. I like that Camille is stepping out of her relationship to pursue her interests and desires. I think the mayoral race is extraneous and a bit over the top. I think Sarah's plotline is weak. I like what they did with Amber in this week's episode, and also what's going on with Drew and that girl.
I think they are really exploring the intricacies of intimate human relationships. It feels honest and real to me. I've always disliked when this show was too dramatic because it felt farcical and ratings driven.
All I can add is that Julia needs to get a job. asap. Apply at Starbucks .
And I do hate what Julia is doing, but Joel isn't really there for her. It is a complete 180 for her. I think if Joel were home more it wouldn't be so bad. And yeah, you can say Joel did that for years, but he likes being a SAHD.
Did none of you go away for college across the country?
You don't really come home much, if at all.
Yes, but I find it weird they never even mention her or show a phone call with her or anything. Most likely the actress wanted off the show, which I get, but there is a way to keep her story line going if that wasn't the case.
Drew is at school. It's more local but most of his story line doesn't interact with any of the other characters anyway and they still show what's going on with him. Just like I find it weird that none of the Bravermans' spouses ever speak about their own siblings, parents, etc. It's a TV show and we have to suspend disbelief, etc., but it's just an annoying point for me.

He's not "more local." He IS local. They live in Berkeley, and he goes to Berkeley.
A kid at Cornell is simply going to be a non-entity on a daily basis. That's actually life-like. There's no "suspend[ing] disbelief."

I was referring to the fact that the Bravermans' spouses never ever talk to their own families when I made that comment. That, to me, is not life-like.
And I don't think they need to include Hattie in every episode, but I would find it weird if a kid, even going to school across the country, didn't come home for Christmas or if their parents did not mention going to see her at the holidays instead.
It's a thread where we are discussing things that annoy us about this show. Many of us are annoyed they wrote Hattie out of it. I don't see the big deal.
the show creators have said before that the big challenge with the show is the sheer number of characters. That's a lot of storylines and a lot of people to pay.
Drew is so awkward. I find myself cringeing for him with respect to most of his social interactions. But I think the actor does a fantastic job of playing an awkward 18 year old.

I hate Hattie. I'm thrilled she's gone.
You want annoying? Hattie was annoying.
Writing her off was an excellent decision, and using Cornell as an excuse was perfect.

I agree he is awkward.
I hated that the story line with his ex-g/f (I forget her name) having an abortion wrapped up so quickly. Part of me thought that maybe they would initially have her say she was aborting the baby but actually keep it and then it's a surprise later on. But it didn't play out that way. I wish they would've spent more time on that story line.

All this-what about Haaaaaattie?- talk is weird. Even the sister wives " reality show" only mention their local-university-going-oldest-son once or twice a season, and there is no debating his existence.
If the writers wrote in dialogue about characters not present all the time it would be gossipy and soap opera like. Everyone all invested in each other's business. And a random phone call and mention of non present characters is always weird, and a little hokey. Ala Skype used on the Big Bang theory and how I met your mother with parents. There was a Skype scene last season wih Hattie and it was weird.
I like this season. I like to get mad at Julia. I am curious where Zeke and Camille are going. I am not sure that is Crosby's baby. i lime Amber and I want her to get some direction outside a man. She seems to be picking up her skills at the luncheonette and I think Ryan will challenge her on that.
I don't want Christine as mayor. I just don't like how easy resurgence into the workforce is being for her!

Yes- he definitely nails the part lol. He also makes me cringe, and vomit in my mouth a little.

Who are you people?! Look at his hair! He's totally dreamy!

You don't think it is Crosby's baby? Then who do you think is the dad?

Didn't she date the good doctor right up to the end and the baby was really close after? I could have my timeline skewed. Something seemed off about all the " look how white she is!"comments. Just weird, ya know?

I agree Drew is cute. And nice. And I like his hair! Drew, I'll be your girlfriend.
The actress who plays Hattie is going to Columbia. I don't really miss her but wish they'd bring her boyfriend back, maybe to work on Kristina's campaign. I just looked him up - LOL, his name is Michael Jordan - but it looks like he's on to bigger and better things.
I actually find Kristina running for mayor and having a legitimate shot way more realistic that Bob Little's big-time political machine-style campaign in Berkeley. That bugged me so much about his last season.
I don't know why people hate Jasmine. If I had to put up with Crosby I would sometimes sound strident and bitter, too. Plus, she gave up Alvin Ailey for him. Okay, maybe she is a little dumb.

.... The doctor she dated was black.
Yep. Am I completely ignorant here, but can't pigment vary from generation to generation regardless of the parents pigments? I felt like all the "so white" comments were trying too hard to cement Crosby as the father.
ETA: am I also ridiculously off on the timeline of pregnancy and The reunion of Jasmine and Crosby?

Er, I just took it as "this baby is white" and Jabar is obviously darker skinned. And I thought there was a decent amount of time between the wedding and her announcing the pregnancy. I could be wrong.
That would be an excellent twist, but I didn't make anything of the "the baby is white!" comments. DH's uncle is white, his aunt is black, their two boys are 25 and 23, and they STILL joke about how white they are, and how surprising it was when they were born.

I think you are off, I think there was a jump in time after they got married and she got pregnant.

I didn't think anything of the white comments. I was actually surprised by how light our dd was when she was born. She got a little darker as she got older and tans really easy, but she is still lighter than most other biracial kids we know. A friend of mine has five biracial kids all with the same parents, but they have different skintones and hair textures.
