I don't know -- the ironic wearing of ugly sweaters has been a trend since what, 2007? That's when all of a sudden it seemed like everyone was throwing ugly sweater parties or posting pictures of them on Facebook. I think it is kind of super overdone at this point.

Yes. This was a thing when I was in college, and I graduated in 06!
I was a HS teacher and they did "ugly sweater day". I always wondered if any of the staff had a "holy shit" moment when they realized they owned half the ugly sweaters the kids wore. For the record, I was not among that group of staff, lol.
