I know it varies and all that jazz, but how much did it cost you to hire movers? My quote I got from Chicago to Indy was 2600, and exH was like wow that is high. He seems to think it only cost us 1800 for a full service move including packing from Indy to Chicago. No freaking way. He must be out of his damn mind. He must be remembering wrong.

Mine was the same as Smace. We packed everything ourselves, rented a u haul and got movers thru emove.com. I've used emove 4x now and had good experiences.

I've moved a lot. The cheapest state-to-state move (about 1000 miles from point A to point B) was $1800. And it showed. They guys were hacks and it was a nightmare. I honestly didn't think our stuff was going to show up. I did all the packing for that move as well.
The most expensive was a full-service move about 500 miles. It was probably a bit more because a company H worked for paid for it, but that was about $4500. Much better experience overall.
We moved about 15 miles and paid about $800. I did the packing for that one too.

Was that the total cost between uhaul, and crew? How far was the move? I know there are tons of variables, and maybe this is the route to go. I didn't think my quote was that bad, but now he put doubt in my mind. lol

The rest of the moves we did ourselves. Painful.
See this makes more sense to me. There is no way he is remembering right. He says that 1800 was them packing, and moving us. They were fantastic, but no way were they that cheap.
My move is about 240 miles, and because I don't have a ton of stuff, I will just pack myself. I don't think 2600 is unreasonable.

My parents moved from NJ to FL, movers "packed" and by packed I mean shoved shit in boxes and it cost them $6k
Damn. When we had North American Van lines pack, they did a phenomenal job. It was awkward though when they pulled out my dick candles from a bachelorette party lol .

Ours was about $800. We packed ourselves and used Two Men and a Truck. They charged per hour but worked their butts off. That was for 1 large truck and 4 guys to move 10 miles away. It took about 6-8 hours because we had them stop at a storage unit too.
I just moved and the company I used (3rd time I've used them) charges $170/hr for a crew of 3. This includes driving time between homes and to/from the warehouse. I think $2600 sounds about right.

When we moved within Chicago it was anywhere from $300 to $900, depending on the distance, the floors we were on, and the amount of crap we had to move. We always packed ourselves.
We had a really terrible experience with Midway. DON'T USE MIDWAY. Their quotes are bullshit.
For our move from Chicago to NJ, the university paid; it was about $6000, I think? They did a super duper job. ETA: we used Reebie/Allied Van Lines.
When DH and I moved we used Old Dominion Freight Line. It was around $1,000. We packed everything. They dropped off a truck, we packed, they drove the truck to the new location and left it for us to unpack. It was a really good experience overall and our stuff was perfectly fine.
We (and by we I mean my parents, because they're awesome) paid around $5000 to move me from Michigan to California - 2 bedroom apartments worth of stuff - that was 5 years ago though.
We went through a local company that in turn used Mayflower. They were awful and I refuse to ever use Mayflower again. They didn't tell us (and weren't going to) that they couldn't actually deliver on the promised day. We were supposed to fly to IL 2 days later for my brother's wedding, and DH (then fiance) had to miss the wedding to accept the fucking delivery. Then when they finally did deliver they tried to refuse to put things back together that were supposed to be per the contract. The things they put together it turns out they did a shit job (bed that had screws that weren't in properly, etc.) and they broke and damaged quite a few different things. I get ragey just thinking about the whole thing.
Also, the company we went with, if you packed things yourself, they weren't insured against damage. So we had to have them pack almost everything (making it more expensive). This has been the case in our last move as well (shipment from CA to Shanghai), but we didn't pay for that one so I don't know how much it was.

We're doing a 2,000 mile move. My employer is paying for it, but I know that crating our more delicate furniture is $2,500 by itself, and there's another $1,000 for a shuttle because our house is on a narrow, winding street that the full size moving van can't drive up.
For comparison, the estimate they gave me to move our 200 bottles of wine was $4,600. I died and then figured out how to ship them myself.
I just paid $2,200 to move 200 miles (I did all packing). The breakdown was 6 hours at $120/hour for loading and unloading plus a flat $1,400 for the drive.

We moved 50 miles. Rented the truck the night before and had movers come at 8a.m.. It took them about 3 hours to load and then 3 hours to unload at the new house. Total =6 hours plus one hour of drive time. We returned the truck that evening. We paid around $800. That included two furniture dolly's, appliance dolly and furniture pads.

Full pack (like, they packed everything in our 1300 sq ft house), 700 miles was $4000. Coming back, same distance but with about 1000 more lbs was $5500. Again, full pack.
We moved 1400 miles and used North American. They partially packed us and stored our stuff for 30 days before they brought it out (we needed to find an apartment in our new city). It was under $2k, but over $1,600. I really enjoyed our experience with North American Van Lines. They did a great job, were really easy to work with and didn't lose anything!
