I am taking about 5 months leave, DH is taking the remaining 7 months...so he is being quite adamant that the diaper bag we buy can't be overly girly, which I get...would you think that this would work? As in, I know it isn't a traditional diaper bag, but is it BIG enough?
I think it looks big enough. I had the popular skip hop cross shoulder bag and I didn't think it was big enough, but it wasn't ridiculously small, we made it work....what you posted looks a lot bigger.
1) I never wanted a diaper bag too big because then you end up lugging around crap that you don't need. 2) My H felt the same way which is why I went with the Skip Hop dash. But they have others, in non-girly prints and they have great stroller clips included. 3) my essential diaper bag contained: diapers, wipes, bottle(s), a spare change of clothes in case of a blow out, diaper cloth and maybe a toy or two.
I am surprised at how little I actually need with the baby. If it were me, I would get a diaper bag for me, and get him a nice backpack to carry around when he is with baby.
We are doing cloth diapering so thanks for the heads up about needing extra space for that. There is a little boutique nearby that has one of the Skip Hop bags so I can go check it out.
Good to know big isn't necessarily better, I presumed I would need lots of space.
We wound up just using a regular ol' backpack as a diaper bag a majority of the time. It was more comfortable, in my opinion, than a messenger style bag and it was plenty big enough.
I started out carrying a Petunia Picklebottom messenger bag and quickly tired of the style. For me, it wasn't worth the investment.
We have a Jujube BFF and have really liked it. You have the option of wearing it as a backpack or using a shoulder strap and we thought that the size was perfect. Some of the patterns are terrible, but we got ours in a neutral shade so both my husband and I are comfortable carrying it.

DH picked out our Columbia messenger-style bag and really liked it, but next time I would get something a bit bigger/with a flatter bottom, and definitely stroller clips. He will use the same one (for our hypothetical) again most likely.
We CD'd (first time I can say it past tense - whoo hoo for potty training!) and if we were out for more than a few hours I just took 2 small wet bags - one for clean extras and one dirty. During errands I would take one extra CD and always had a back-up disposable in the car "emergency bag" since we averaged about one pack of disposables in each size due to traveling, antibiotics, etc.
