So when I "researched myself" to make an "informed decision," amazingly, I found out that birth has a higher complication and morbidity rate than abortion! But I was puzzled to see that we ALLOW and in some cases ENCOURAGE even homebirth. Can you explain this dichotomy? Should we stop allowing birth? Should we stop allowing homebirth? Should we force women to be admitted into hospitals for birth?
wait...what? They don't? I'm pretty sure mine does. Is that not standard?
lol! I knew someone would call me out. I don't know. I would guess it depends on the midwife. Some of the homebirth ones people use are a little woo.
Oh, yeah. My practice is all CNM and they don't do home births. My state actually has some weird drama with their midwife licensing - I think they only do CNM's and but not the other kind (i.e. not nurses) and they aren't actually allowed to officiate homebirths without risking their license? Or something? I dunno. I've asked people on my local to explain it to me and every time they link me to random change.org petitions that just state these facts as being Very.Bad.Things with no real explanation. I gave up caring since I love my midwifery practice, they're not going anywhere, they work with a good hospital and they were as supportive as I could ever have wished about every single one of my crunchy birth plan wishes so I'm not sure where the bad part is.
But the result as far as I can tell is that my area is low on licensed wooish practitioners so I'd imagine it's different elsewhere.
As Albuquerque citizens vote on a ballot measure that would ban later abortion in the city, Catholics for Choice has been on the ground helping local Catholics make their voices heard. Catholics in Albuquerque have lifted their voices in opposition to the ballot measure in radio and print ads. Citing their commitment to social justice, freedom of conscience and religious liberty for all, they called on their neighbors to join them in voting against the measure.

I'm haven't read everything, but being an abortion doula is completely different than performing abortions. That said, many people who are involved in RJ work and abortion funding do end up going to med school to learn to perform abortions.
I think there is a spectrum. I'm sure some are just offering support, but that some may try to learn non-invasive ways of doing some them themselves. Or you will have curanderas that work with herbs and what not.
I highly doubt that these women are going to go to med school to learn to perform abortions though. I mean, med school requires the MCAT, hundreds of thousands of dollars, etc. It's not like they will let whomever wants join in on an abortion workshop/class.
Let's not kid ourselves that women who feel strongly about this are going to do everything by the book to help. Because even if they did go to med school to learn, there are very few clinics that meet all of the requirements of the law, so where would they (legally) perform the abortions?! So if you are almost guaranteed to be doing something illegally, you probably wouldn't go through the trouble of MCAT, med school, passing the boards, etc. to "follow the law" as much as possible. Not to mention how long all of this would take.
I have a number of friends involved with the Abortion Doula Project (the group that trains abortion doulas) and I have never heard anyone say they were planning to learn to perform abortions on the side without schooling. You don't need a MD to be trained in performing abortions. Most of the people I know who have decided they wanted to completely change direction so they can become providers have gone for their NP, which is significantly less expensive.
Hi there, I'm interested in learning more about this group. I'm a feminist/reproductive health journalist from the San Francisco Bay Area, currently working on an investigative piece about the impact of TX's abortion laws on women in the Valley, and the rising ranks of women who are self-aborting with misoprostol as abortion providers shut down.
Please email me at elynnesf@gmail.com if you're available to talk about this group in greater detail
