My dog does the same thing. Sometimes he's fine, sometimes I come home and there's a little bit of everything chewed up into tiny pieces all over the living room floor.
The only solution I've found is to make sure I don't leave anything around that he might chew up and to close all bedroom doors before I leave.

He should be crated when you aren't home. I promise you that he won't be mad at you for doing it. His chewing is his way of acting out, and if you keep in the crate, he feels safe and comforted.
We also have to close the bedroom doors and make sure everything is picked up. I've also found that keeping lots of chew toys out while I'm gone really helps. I just make sure it isn't something stuffed with a squeaker (which will be destroyed in 5 minutes) or small enough for any of them to choke on. Good luck, I know it's frustrating!
