It's taken me a while to get onto a computer and type this out - life with two babies is definitely busy! But here's the boys' birth story:
We had a scheduled c-section for Thursday morning at 8:15am. We got up, got ready, and headed in to the hospital. Thankfully everything was running on time so they told me to get undressed right away and we got going. We walked down to the operating room and I got a spinal, which was not pleasant but bearable.
After that things went very quickly. They laid me down, got everything set up...and then I started to feel like I was going to puke. And I did, for nearly the entire duration of the surgery, and on and off afterward. I did get anti-nausea meds, but they only helped some. Unfortunately I wasn't able to do skin to skin right away because of throwing up, but I did get a respite long enough to see them hold up the twins and to see H holding them once they were cleaned off.
I got wheeled back to my room where they kicked out our parents and we got to have an hour or so of family time - part of which I was still puking but started feeling better. I got my first good look a the boys at this point. Then our parents came in and got to see the boys for a bit and they left after that since I still wasn't feeling well.
The typical stay in the hospital I was at is 2 days for a c-section, but the boys weren't ready to go home at that point - they had lost a little too much weight. I was breastfeeding, but not sure how much they were getting. Over the course of those 3 days we had some family come in and visit, which now I kind of regret. H and I were so exhausted that it just stressed us out more, and we weren't able to get as much sleep as we would have otherwise.
After continuously losing weight, on Sunday the attending pedi had to make the call to put the boys in the pediatrics ward (which I'm not sure if that's the same as the NICU) and H and I were getting discharged. That was possibly the hardest day of my life. H and I had gotten about 8 hours of total sleep over 4 days and were exhausted, I had post partum hormones going on, and we both just lost it when that decision was made. We left the boys at the hospital around 9pm that night and made our way home without them.
The silver lining (which my Dr pointed out) was that we were able to get a decent night's sleep on Sunday - we both got a full 8 hours. Woke up Monday morning and went to see the boys, and thankfully they had gained enough weight through formula feeding that they were able to be discharged. I was so relieved.
So now we're all home and doing well. My milk has been really slow coming in so the boys are mostly getting formula, but as long as they're healthy and gaining weight, I'm totally fine with that.
And if you got through all of that, here's your cookie (sorry it's so big):
They are beautiful! I'm sorry you were so sick during delivery. That sounds really hard. How are you all adjusting to life as a family of four?
It's been going pretty well. H has four weeks off work and my parents have been here every day to make dinner and help out, and will continue to do so until Sunday when H's parents come for about a week. What I'm not looking forward to is when H has to go back to work and I'm doing it on my own. That will be interesting, to say the least.
