My niece and nephew are five year old twins, my side of the family apparently has strong genes because they look very much like my sister, who looks a lot like me. When I take them out people automatically assume they are mine, I was in target today and a woman who was probably in her forties approached and said oh your kids are so cute, are they identical?
Me: Um....what? Lady: Are they identical or fraternal? Me: One is a boy and one is a girl. Lady: Yeah, but are they identical?
I just looked at her smiled and said yep and went on my way.

People, in general, are idiots. My cousin is half chinese with black hair and dark almond eyes, and I'm blonde/blue eyed. We obviously look nothing alike. We are the same age and my mom babysat for my cousin when we were babies. People would ask her ALL.THE.TIME. if we were twins. She usually said yes, identical. Hehe.
My friend has identical twins and after people ask about it, she's actually had more than one person ask, "Are they both yours?" DOH.

I don't know if twins are genetic or not, some people say yes some people say no, but I have five sisters, one has two sets of fraternal twins, and the other has fraternal twin girls. The two girls look so much alike they did a DNA test to see if they were identical, but they are not, they look so much alike it is eery.

Fraternal twins can skip a generation. It is due to the mother releasing more than one egg at ovulation. Identical twins are when one egg is released and then fertilized, then the embryo splits into two. Identical twins are kind of a fluke.
You wouldn't believe the goofy things peoples ask the parents of twins One lady INSISTED they couldn't be fraternal, because that only applies to boys. Thus, they were paternal. Hrm. And yeah, frats can be genetic, identical twins were considered to not be, until recently, when new studies indicate that perhaps there is a genetic component. Fragile eggs or something, maybe, I don't know the details at all.

Why is it eerie that your nieces look alike?
How do you feel about having twins?
I don't know if eery is the right word. I guess it is just shocking that they aren't identical considering that even my sister has trouble telling them apart sometimes.
I think twins are great, the bond between the twins is so strong, I love that they have that closeness with each other. My last pregnancy ended in a stillbirth at about 19 weeks, so i'm more than a little gun shy about getting pregnant again. I'm already considered high risk and being pregnant with twins would make it even more risky. In theory though, if the risks could be managed, I would love to have twins.

Are your girls identical or fraternal? Either way they are adorable.

They're fraternal And, thank you! Lots of twins in my family. I probably ovulate two eggs regularly. Here's hoping #3 comes without a partner! Really, though, I love having twins. They are best friends.

Twins can look alike even if they are not identical.
({) (}) I am sorry for your loss. I was wondering because it sounds like you have a chance of having your own set based on your sisters.

Do they have their own language? My nieces were in speech therapy for a while because they made up their own language that they talked to each other in, but to the rest of us it sounded like gibberish. All of the twins are really close, it is really sweet to watch.

Oh, yes I could believe it! I've had people ask if mine are identical or paternal. (yes, that's right.). I've also had people argue with me when I say that my boys are fraternal. Really, complete strange in Target? You think you know better than me, their mother? Especially since the boys don't look identical.
I actually read of extremely rare cases where boy/girl twins can be identical. Something about how a boy loses the Y chromosome, so they become a girl, but they have Fragile X syndrome. But again, it's extremely, extremely rare.
Yup, me too, Psyck. Crazy shit. Ordinary, not really their own language, but they make up words together that only they use. My favorite right now is their word for naked. When Naomi's naked (which is a lot, she's a nudist), she's Nakey-Noo! Maya is Nakey-Moo (we call her Maya Moo). It's pretty damn cute that they used the same word but adapted it to their names, lol. They definitely jabber a lot ito each other, but I get most of it. The sweetest thing is that they always want to know where the other one is. Naomi slept in a little this morning and when she woke up she immediately yelled for Maya, who was already downstairs. Maya RACED up the stairs to go meet her when she heard <3

That is so cute I think my ovaries just exploded. The girls still sleep in the same bed and they are almost four, and if they are out of each others site they are constantly running around looking for each other.
I was helping little BIL study for his Health class. One question true or false question was "fraternal twins happen when two sperm fertilize the same egg." He swears that his teacher said that was TRUE. MIL was backing him on this.

People are really dumb. When I tell people that I am a twin people ask me when my birthday is and when her birthday is...really? Uh it is the same freaking day

One of you could have been born before midnight and the other after. Lol
