The missing letter R. The words wicked and pissa. Sports as religion. Chowda. Fall.
Love that dirty water.
ETA: Sweet Caroline.
I've since moved home, but when I lived in NYC I missed the same things. I remember coming home my first Thanksgiving, going to a local bar, and hearing townies loudly bitching about the Bruins in full Boston accent glory. I felt all "YES, MY PEOPLE".
Yup. Been in NYC 12 years, but there is no place like home. Sometimes I get sad that my kid will probably dislike Boston after growing up in Manhattan.
Ontario - The beach, the countryside, being able to get anywhere I go on a daily basis in 15 minutes or less yet still being close to multiple urban centres.

I grew up in Atlanta, where I live now, but home has always been Charleston, where we spent summers and every holiday, except Thanksgiving, and where my parents have lived most of the time for the last 20 years. I know more people there, than here, and still spend about three weeks a year there. My whole moms side of the family lives there. We are all close. I love the dinner parties at my aunts house, who lives next door to my parents, where everyone brings something, and we have ended up with 10 different kinds of meat at one dinner before. Gatherings at a minimum have 30 people, all I know and know me. The chaos is crazy, but fun. People have different values from the people I know in Atlanta. They go out of their way to spend time with you, and it doesn't have to be doing something fun or some date made two weeks in advance, they will come over to catch and clean crab, pick veggies, or just sit on the dock or in the house and visit. My family there cooks a lot more than my friends here. There is always good food.
South Jersey/ Philly area now living in San Diego.
I miss the friendliness of the area. I also miss Wawa and Wegmans. A rainy day during the summer and thunderstorms. Also, seeing how absolutely green it is in the northeast and autumn weather. Holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas just aren't the same when it's 70 degrees.
If you have moved away from where you grew up or where your family is, what is comforting to you about "home"? And by that I mean the region - or the place.
I am "home" and I find the accent comforting (Philly/south jersey). Also wawa.
Love it! I miss my parents living in the city -- accent was stronger there, lol.
I am in NJ now and I miss the hills in PA. We always went to my grandparents in Bucks Co. and I loved the hills on the drive there. My parents live there now and as soon as we start seeing the big hills I feel like I am home.

Florida: Spanish moss on the trees, the smell of mangroves and salt water, the sound of the waves hitting the beach and the creak of my parent's staircase banister, Publix, Waffle House and my hair looking like crap because of the humidity.
NE Kansas is where I grew up. I miss the rolling hills and beautiful scenery. We live in a very flat area now. I also miss the small town atmosphere (less than 700 people) that I grew up in.
I'm in NE KS now and I really miss the flat area where you're at lol. I miss the wide open spaces and being able to see for miles. All these trees, while pretty, feel clausterphobic to me. I miss the small town atmosphere as well. I kind of miss having everyone know me, the waitress at the cafe knowing what I want and not needing to ask. I miss my favorite local stores. I really, really miss hot beef sandwhiches, a slice of bread, roast beef, mashed potatoes on top, all covered in gravy. I swear I can't find that here. I miss fitting in, I live in cowboy boots and it oddly stands out here. I could keep going, but I'm feeling homesick at the moment.

That's funny that we are flip flopped both in location and missing things from home! Do you get to come back to this area for holidays? If so, you will have to pack in all the good stuff while you are home. If I remember correctly where you moved, I can see the cowboy boots sticking out. You picked the wrong college town for boots! Ha ha!

I tried really hard to move to the other college town where boots would fit in, but couldn't get a job there to work out. Maybe some day! I won't get home for Thansgiving, but will for Christmas and maybe a weekened soon. It's not too far. It did make me laugh that we flip flopped.

I went to wegmans yesterday but I'm not sure I get why it's awesome. I almost got run over by crazies, they were sold out of some stuff I needed and there was no butcher. Maybe the wegmans by my parents just sucks? It's in south jersey. It was built after I moved away.

I'm so curious where you're from! My mom also grew up in NE Kansas, except her town has just over 1,000 people.
Jersey checking in! Specifically, Shore area, but what I love most about my area of the Shore is that I can drive 10 minutes to the beach, or drive 5 minutes to horse farms.
I love pulling off my exit on the GSP and seeing the cows/sheep/donkeys grazing on the farm near there. I love the old fashioned food markets and farms and pumpkin pies and biscuits from my favorite market. I miss a hot summer day after a BBQ and swimming with my family and getting a sweet Carvel cone. Or even better local family ice cream stores. Or going for a walk on the boardwalk and playing skee ball. I could play skee ball all damn day. I miss the first trip to the beach and diving in the freezing ocean for the first time in early summer.
Four seasons Greenery - grass! Trees! Blue crabs Boating
Former Marylander?
I live in MD now and love it - we will never leave. I was born in Atlanta and lived there until I was 14. I've been in Baltimore ever since so now I also consider Baltimore home. Re: Atlanta, I miss ordering iced tea and being asked "sweet or unsweet." I miss southern accents and the phrases - I'm fixing to (do something), y'all, right quick. Little things like that.

Maybe snow during the holidays? Home is kind of messed up for me. My parents moved from the Midwest to the South a month after I graduated high school and I haven't really been back since (my extended family has joined my parents too). So my parents house and current city really aren't home, but neither is their former city as we have no family there and no reason to visit (plus it was severely lacking in character and food options other than chain restaurants).
We're in our current city for Thanksgiving but are heading "home" next week for MIL's surprise birthday party. I love the northeastern accents, the pizza, and REAL Dunkin Donuts. lol.
Weirdly enough, New Mexico feels like home even though I didn't live there as long as other places. We've been gone 6 months and I miss the food, the hot air balloons in the air, and the smell of green chile roasting as a sign of fall.
I order a box of fresh chile from New Mexican Connection in the fall and fire up the grill to roast them while we rake leaves!

Ooh good to know! So far we've been lucky with friends bringing us stuff when they come visit or shipping stuff. But there will come a time when I need more chile.....
OC/ Orange Hills, CA - Perfect weather, great running trails, Peter's Canyon, getting to the beach in about 15 minutes, view from Chapman Hill on a clear day, proximity to great shopping areas by taking the back route, day trips to SD, baseball games at a stadium where you won't get stabbed, not paying for Disneyland because you knew someone who worked there and could sign you in, being close to LA without having to live in LA, flying into/out of John Wayne instead of LAX. Minus the OPA horse smell, I loved it! It was a great place to grow up.
We grew up verrrrrrry close to one another!
I miss 70 degree weather in December, driving on 6-lane FREEways (not "highways"), driving generally, Disneyland, nice beaches, the Christmas light boat parade in Balboa, South Coast Plaza and Fashion Island (yes, I have larger versions of all those stores here but I miss walking around a mall, rather than schlepping bags from one store to another in the cold!), nicer/happier/less work-centric people, greater integration across different socioeconomic classes, the Mexican food, some of my closest friends from high school, the citrus trees in my childhood backyard.
Ok, this is not making me like NYC too much right now

Are you seriously judging a grocery store based on the week of thanksgiving?? Try again

The donuts. NorCal donuts are awful - no one knows how to do a proper cream filling and it's all vanilla pudding or whipped cream. JUST NO. I can't wait until we get our first Dunkin. Also, I miss driving in fresh snow.
