We just switched from an automatic litter box to the Breeze system and it's awesome. We have two cats. It smells for a few minutes when they poo, but then it's fine. And the pee goes down into essentially a puppy pad, so NO PEE SMELL!!
If you don't want to use clay, I think your only other options are wood type or newspaper type litters and to my knowledge, neither of those are clumping.

Which corn-based litter did you try? We use World's Best Multi, have four cats and it clumps fine, and we haven't had a problem with smelling pee (we have two that don't cover their poop, so we can smell that).

arm&hammer has a natural corn-based litter that I've used previously; it's a decent clumping litter but it does get stinky quickly (I have two cats; I had to dump the litter and start over every other week) ... umm, the only other thing I can think of is that world's best cat litter stuff. (which I haven't tried... so I have no reviews of it.)
I forgot about the corn. We used something similar to Feline Pine. My husband said the smell reminded him of a barn. We've switched back to clay since the boxes are in our living room and there's 2 of them.

I'm glad someone said this I was starting to think I was making it up. DH bought the A&H corn litter and even with the waste tied up in a plastic bag in makes the kitchen stink when it is in the trash. Using just the fresh step we could put waste in paper bags in the trash can and not have an issue. We are now mixing the corn with FS to get rid of it, but it is not going fast enough.
We used Fresh Step in the past and i stuck to just that because it was the only one that i didn't have to run to the litterbox all the time to change. It's been pretty dusty in our house recently and the only dust maker I can really think of is the litterbox.

I think I'm going to try World's Best next.
We used World's Best in our automatic box..it clumped well overall and didn't have a ton of dust; however, they did track it everywhere. I guess that's a problem with a lot of them, though. The urine smell was pretty horrible, but some Arm & Hammer deodorizer did the trick.

We tried the wheat one in the past but our one cat who has a fondness for baked goods kept eating it so we are back to tidy cats small spaces. I would like a little less scent and dust but it does ok. I kind of side shake it to mix the large and small particles. Please don't get a covered box. It is disliked by cats. Imagine being trapped in that dusty nasty small.

We started using blue buffaloes litter and love it. It's made of walnut shells my cats like it and it keeps the smell really down especially when cleaning it.

We use Exquisite which is like Feline Pine, but cheaper. It actually smells pretty good (before it's all pooped on, of course). It doesn't clump, but that doesn't bother me. I couldn't stand the powder from the clay litters anymore, so we switched about 5years ago. We tried the World's Best Litter and our cats boycotted that box. Guess that was a fail.

I've been really pleased with the Dr. Elsey's line. We use cat attract but also precious cat. They're pretty low dust, especially compared with the Fresh Step we were using before.

Can I rave about this product too? I just started using it in the last week (switched from world's best) and have been super impressed with it. Its pricy but I highly recommend it. It clumps better and eliminates odors way better!
