Usually gift cards unless there's really something specific I want, in which case that's what I ask H for. My entire family thinks gift cards are impersonal, but I really prefer having the freedom to go out and buy what I want vs. asking for something specific and then maybe receiving it and realizing I wanted something else.
Occasionally a gift card for spa stuff - that's what H usually resorts to but honestly it's low on my list. I get a pedi and shellac mani every 2 weeks already at a pretty cheap place that I trust so I don't want to pay $60 for a manicure at a salon. Sometimes I will get a massage.
I usually ask H for a weekend away somewhere, even somewhere close. A night in a hotel, a nice dinner out, etc. I would rather do that than have a party or get other gifts.
For my parents and ILs who want gift ideas, I will usually ask for clothing gift cards so I can start purchasing spring/summer attire (my bday is in March).
Books or DVDs. This year (my birthday was 11 days ago), I got all 7 seasons of Gilmore Girls from H. He also took me out to dinner and to see the movie About Time. He did good.

My husband bought this for me the very first Christmas we had together seven years ago. I just popped it in and started it over this morning. It's really the best gift ever.

Before kids I would ask for makeup or jewelry or gift cards for things like massages or some other spa treatment.
Now that I have kids, all I'd like for my birthday (3 months from now) is for someone to take my kids for the night and for H and I to sleep in our bed at the same time for as long as we want. That sounds like heaven to me right now.
We have a 3 year old. I want a date night with my husband where I wake up and have NO CHILDREN to take care of. I.E. I want to sleep in without guilt and have a hot night with my husband the day before.

I like books or movies. This year H got me all seasons of Gilmore Girls. Last year I got a book and a gift card to Target because I wanted a sweater but H didn't want to fail.
Usually I have a "me" day. Me, H and David go out for lunch where I want and then I go shopping and spend about $300. He also gets me something small like some perfume or a necklace and David makes me something. *This* is what I want, personally.
