I live this. I have an unnatural fear of the zombie apocalypse. Not enough to stockpile guns and 10 years worth of food and water or to go live in the wilderness, but enough that when I can't fall asleep, I try to plan how we would defend our house. We are screwed btw, since we have single story ranch house with low to the ground windows.

We have the same house. I tell my DH that when the zombies come, we have to get in the attic. And pull up the cord so the zombies can't follow. He thinks I'm insane.
Curious: Are people kidding when they say they are afraid of the zombie apocalypse or do they seriously believe it could happen? I've never understood why this is such a big thing lately. I had a conversation with friends the other day and one girl seemed to be dead serious that she was scared of it. To the point where she has a plan with her husband about what to do when it happens. I don't get it.

I have Plan A, Plan B and Plan C in place for the ZA. A is basically my earthquake evacuation plan with minor modifications. B is my "shit has hit the fan, via la revolucion!" plan. C is the one I don't expect to use (involves dying in glorious battle and taking many, many zombies with me in a suicide mission).
But no, I don't expect the dead to reanimate. Planning escape in random situations is kind of fun.

Pretty much this. I think of it as planning for crazy (and some maybe not so crazy) eventualities. We are lucky that we live in an area not known for the usual types of natural disasters (tornadoes, floods, earthquakes, etc) so the ZA is what I use as an example of what to plan for. Plus, the mind wanders late at night.
I also think that there is something important about learning/knowing some of the skills that preppers are known for, and not just using a firearm/self-protection, but growing/raising your own food, making things from scratch, conserving water and food stuffs, etc.

Yo. I like to go over the list of things that don't make me a complete drain on post ZA/superflu society and what is in my wheelhouse that I should pick up.
Of course, in the even of the ZA, I'm probably gonna have to go with plan c.

IMO, "Zombie Apocolypse" is code for "It's gonna get BAD". So maybe it's a natural disaster, so you'll need to prep for a few days (think Hurricane Sandy ---> Hurricane Katrina levels). And then you have the next level of a terrorist attack on your city. BAD, but only until help arrives, clean up occurs and rebuilding (points out that can take days/weeks/months depending on where you are in accordance with 'ground zero'). And then you have the next level of "We're not going to come back from this" BAD a la "Book of Eli" and everything has crumbled.
Do I have any real plans? No. Do I daydream of scenarios while watching "The Walking Dead"? Yes. Get some of those "survivor" type books! It will tell you how to build a fire, find food, start a farm, secure your location, find the drugs and main things you're going to NEED, etc etc etc. Ex: I know we need WATER, 1st thing. No one is surviving a solid week without water.
etc etc
No, I do not believe the dead will EVER reanimate. *-)
Oh, and while I don't think the dead will reanimate, I do think it isn't outside the realm of possibility that some sort of virus could infect a significant portion of the population, rendering them unable to care for themselves, thus overwhelming the existing health care system and possibly throwing communities into chaos.
Something along the lines of the Spanish Flu of 1918 that afflicted the young and healthy at a higher rate than normal and killed over 600,000 people here in the US and over 20 million world wide in about a year.

jinx
I love that I am not the only one who thinks about this stuff. Sometimes DH thinks I am nuts with this stuff. But like I said in a PP, the mind wanders late at night.
I don't fear an ACTUAL zombie apocalypse but I am scared of a pandemic, a la the Hot Zone, Contagion, etc. That shit is scaaaaaaaaary. And pretty much has the same type of escape plan- hunker down, act like you aren't home, save food, boil water. Like what if a pandemic got so bad that there was no one to man the power grid and such? And people were just breaking into houses to steal food and medicine? Eeeeep!
I should not watch movies. Ever.
Yep, this is me. These are the things that actually do scare me and are a lot more likely than a zombie apocalypse. I just read The Dog Stars and that was pretty realistic. Also, Alas Babylon, which is a post nuclear war scenario story.
The Walking Dead and Doomsday Preppers has made me a little bit more mindful of disaster preparation. I'm not even close to having a plan like most of the posters here but I now try to make sure we have a good stock of water and can goods that could get us through a week or so.
A friend recently laughed at me because I said I didn't have enough survival supplies for the dog. She thought I was silly for even considering that. I was dead serious about it. I also spend a lot of time thinking what I would do with my dog during the ZA. I can't imagine leaving her and she doesn't bark much. At the same time, I'd be so mad if she decided to get rowdy just as a herd was passing by. Thankfully, I feel like a ZA is the last thing we'll have to be prepared for so the pup is in the clear for now.
