I've been lucky enough to have a vomit-free kid for almost his entire life (he's 3 years, 4 months). Until tonight. What do I do? How do I tell if it's bad food or a virus thingy? Is there anything I can give him?
When DS starts barfing we cut all dairy. It's just that much more disgusting with dairy involved. We do cold water and if it lasts longer than a day, pedialite frozen pops. We also have buckets stationed through the house.
Pedialyte. Start there. Then move to Popsicles, crackers, jello, etc. at that age you really can't tell what started it but the best thing you can do is keep him hydrated.
Keep him off dairy and give him pedialite. I *think* my local hospital suggests kids take 5-10mls at a time every 15 minutes for 2 hours, then increasing if he is able to keep it down. Poor kids can get dehydrated so fast. When DS was sick a few months ago we gave him fluids in that manner after his IV to keep him hydrated till he could keep fluids down. Try not to give just water as fluids with calories are especially important in sick kids. Hope he's feeling better soon.
nursewife Three times since 11:30 pm. Not keeping little sips of water down. I just put him in bed. Hopefully he'll sleep.
Try to avoid just water. Fluid with calories will help balance out his electrolytes and give him a bit more energy to help him feel better. Is he fevered at all?

Oh, and for us it was more like 24 hours. He was on pedialyte - about 5 ml every 10 minutes for a few hours and then we moved up to 15 ml and then onto an ounce or two at a time.
He slept until about 9:30 this morning. He tolerated Pedialite and a couple of those plain saltine oyster crackers. (crosses fingers) So mayyyyybe we're good?
Thanks everyone for your help! You guys are the best.

Pedialite in very small amounts. Too much too soon will upset his stomach and he will puke it up. When he is feeling better and wants to eat try and stick to the BRAT diet.
