I use both Smashbox Photo Finish and Hourglass Mineral Veil. I use Hourglass most of the time, but in the hottest part of summer, I find Smashbox works better for me.
I think it's worth it because it makes my face look much fresher all day. Even when I'm not wearing makeup, I find I have to blot a lot less when I'm wearing primer. You can probably get a sample at Sephora to try it out, and Smashbox makes a small size that's half the price of the large size. And if you buy it and find you don't like it or it doesn't work for you, Sephora will take let you return it.
The cheap alternative is Monistat Chafing Gel. I haven't tried it.

Based on the sephora samples, the smashbox one didn't work that well on me. Didn't really notice any difference wearing it vs. not. The Algenist one, on the other hand, made my skin look so dewy and my powder go on so smoothly. I will definitely be buying a full size of that one. I feel like everyone responds differently to various primers.

Agree. You just have to find which ones work best on you. For example, Laura Mercier comes highly recommended, but it was absolutely awful on me.
That's the only one I've used, I had it years ago but it worked great. Maybe I will just stick with that, I wish there was more places near by to try them first.
I disnt like the smashbox one, but on a whim I bought a similar one from maybelline and I love it. Its lile an illuminating primer and I put it on with a foundation stippling (?) Brush.

Ditto. dexteroni, for what it is worth, I was always a Smashbox fan as well, and I now use and love the Monistat Chafing Gel. It feels exactly the same. And a tube is huge and lasts forever.
