The Orphan Master's Son. I just finished The Goldfinch which I was SO looking forward to because The Secret History is my favorite book but I thought it was a let down. Boo.
A seriously crappy YA novel called "Torment." I'm mostly, at this point, incredulous at how bad it is. It's bad to a new level of badness. The heroine is in love with a FALLEN ANGEL, who is totes swoony, y'all. And he is trying to PROTECT her from evil demons! And he orders her around because he TOTALLY KNOWS WHAT'S GOOD FOR HER, and she's all, HAIR TOSS, NOBODY TELLS ME WHAT TO DO, and then does stupid shit, and the book is like, See? SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DON'T LISTEN TO YOUR MAN AND YOU DISOBEY HIM?
It's awesome.
So in other words, another Twilight, just with different trappings.
I just started Nightwoods but I'm only about 20 pages in so far. I just finished Those Who Save Us and I really liked it. A little depressing but pretty good.
I just finished League of Denial, about concussions and the NFL. Really really interesting. I'm not a huge football fan but I watch sometimes and it was cool to watch a game on Sunday and notice how they don't do head to head tackles anymore and how the players seemed to not be as aggressive as I remember from way back. On one play the quarterback got sacked but the guy making the tackle brought him down as gently as he could so the guy didn't get hurt.

Exactly. Except the angel doesn't sparkle. He does, however, glow. Violet. He shines purple.
Oh, and kind of hilariously, the heroine is at a school where people know her predicament and are all swoony over her love story, and one of the guys asks in a roundabout sort of way if angel wang is SUPER OVERPOWERING.

I'm a huge football fan and have been wondering if I'd like this book. Maybe I'll check it out.
Right now I'm ready Sycamore Row by John Grisham and every time the main character speaks I hear Matthew McConaughey because he played the main character in A Time To Kill. I tweeted him ( ) asking for a repeat but he didn't reply. lol!
He does. And then the other girls at the table are like, "MILES, GROSS!" and he shuts up.
But now I wanna know if somewhere in this series of terrible, terrible books, I'm gonna find out. She already nearly faints every time he kisses her; something tells me an angel orgasm would cause her to stroke out entirely.
PLEASE do keep up updated. I'm so serious. And based solely on your description of this book, I hope she does stroke out.

I really liked it. There was an article in Sports Illustrated awhile back that featured Jim McMahon from the Bears, way back in the 80's. I remember him and that team and was sad that he's having issues now. It addresses arguments like "but these guys know they're playing a rough sport and should expect problems and get paid a ton of money so they should just deal". It shows how for a long time the NFL basically ignored players who were injured and had to retire. Like they have a disability program but of the 10,000 or so players who applied for it, only about 350 were receiving it. I could go on, but you should just read the book.
I just finished the two books I have out from the library, and am ready for another two. I've been getting one modern book, and one Agatha Christie mystery each trip. I just finished Gone Girl and Cards on the Table.
I'll be checking back here for ideas for my next trip!
**POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT** lol
What did you think of the ending? I hated it, but so many people seem to love it.
I'm always confused when people say this. I thought the majority of readers hated the ending.

It was such a cop-out ending. There was no depth to it at all. It was kinda like, well, then they just kinda put up with each other for the rest of their lives and lived unhappily ever after. I know not all stories need to have a perfect ending with the bad guy getting his/her just desserts, but if the bad guy isn't getting his/her just desserts, you better have some other creative way to end the story. Make it into some kind of commentary on society, or make the character go through some deep personal realization... something to make the ending impactful. There was nothing here. Completely unsatisfying.
You know what would have been awesome? If she stroked out from angel wang right after giving birth.
I just finished From Scratch, that book about the Food Network and how it got started. I have watched the Food Network for a long time, so I found it really interesting! I am actually jealous of the guy who wrote it for getting to write it.
I just finished Eleanor and Park, which was fantastic. And The Lowland a couple weeks ago, which was absolutely amazing. Seriously. I think about it all the time now.
I can't decide if I should read Bringing up the Bodies or Master of Disguise next.

WTF to the bolded?
Well, I'm old so I remember it, but I have to remember that lots of people here were infants at the time. Or not even born.
