I watered yesterday morning because there was only a 25% chance of rain. Well, it poured, then got up to 93 or something. Should I water again today? There's supposedly NO chance of rain and it's going to be 96 and sunny. Should I water again this morning? What's a good method to decide when to water? (Obviously I'm new to this gardening thing!)
I'm cat/garden sitting for a friend. I re-watered my hanging baskets, her clay potted/full sun pots. My pots are glazed and didn't need water. Neither of our flower borders needed water. Her veggies are on a Rainbird drip system; I'd shut that down if we were getting massive soakings, otherwise I avoid them since she has a deer jets
I water my lettuce when it's hot. For the other plants, I keep an eye and see if they look droopy. It's been sweltering here for a couple of days and is supposed to for the next two, so I'll probably water this morning. It's going to storm tonight but I'm thinking everything will be dry by then anyway. I think for a lot of plants (tomatoes esp) less water is better but you don't want to kill them? You can always stick your finger in the soil to see if it's damp.

The good method to decide when & how much to water depends a lot on what you are watering. Plants in small containers dry out fast. Larger containers take longer to dry out. Things planted in the ground need a lot of deep watering in the beginning, but less over time. Raised veg beds are a whole different ball of wax, because it depends on what kind of fill soil you used in addition to the weather.

I usually water every other day, but I've moved it up to daily when the temps have been staying 90+. It really depends on how much water you got. Sometimes it can rain hard, but not last very long and need watered again.
