So I tripped on some stairs holding my three year old yesterday and twisted my ankle (almost dumped my kid on her head, too, but that's not relevant to this whine). The pain was pretty bad immediately but I was able to walk it off. Iced it last night and tried to stay off it.
It still looks like a tennis ball this morning and hurts when I twist it or touch it. Normal walking is ok. I'm icing and taking advil, sitting with it propped up...what else can I do? How long should I expect this to be a problem? Today is a rest day...am I crazy to think I'll be able to run as normal tomorrow? Please tell me my training isn't going to be derailed because of this stupidity??
With that much swelling, you're probably going to need to take at least a week off of running. RICE - Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. So sorry that happened!
Your training won't be derailed, but if you try to push the recover, you could do more damage. Take time off now to let it heal, and if it's not better in a few days, hit the doctor's office!
Yes you are crazy to think that you'll be running on it by tomorrow. Sorry. The bright side is that no, this will not derail you...as long as you REST. If you run on it tomorrow, it will absolutely derail you. One week will not make or break you. First things first, get that swelling down. I'm sorry. I know it sucks.

Thanks all. You're killing me with a week. A week?! But I know you're probably right. I'll at least wait until the swelling is gone before I consider running. Boo. Boo hoo.
Good timing. Well it's never good timing for a sprained ankle. I came here to ask about sprained ankles too. I fell down our stairs last Friday and twisted my ankle. Mine swelled a little bit and was a little bruised but didn't look too bad. I've been icing and taping it. Unfortunately I still cannot run on it and it's been 6 days. I attempted today and made it 1 minute before I decided it was a bad idea.
Can you walk on it without pain? I read that you should have full range of motion pain free before you run again. Mine still hurts a bit when I go down stairs.
It's killing me not to run but I know I need to rest it and not create permanent problems.
Ive started taping mine with KT tape and it seems to help. I'm hoping to run again next week, maybe???
