Either one, but the Crayolas are harder for a really young child to hold, so the Alex brand would probably be a better choice for a 1-2 year old.

We used these until the boys were 16/18months and started getting into coloring.

The actual triangles or the discs I posted above.
When he's older than 15m most likely you can start getting the jumbo crayons.
