we bought a christmas present last year in case the baby came early/on time. He was born Dec. 22 and it was a fun gamble that worked out. At that point every single thing the kid had was new, but I still wanted to buy him a present.
For her 1st Christmas, at 5 months, DD got some bath toys (they get gross and need to be replaced periodically so if you already have some, more won't hurt), a small crawl tunnel, and a soft babydoll. We get lots of use out of all of them so I didn't consider any of it a waste. I don't remember what was in her stocking...stuff like sippy cups, board books, and teethers I think.
DD crawled about 2 weeks after Christmas and the crawl tunnel (the Jr. one by Alex Toys) was a huge hit with her.
Don't buy anything if you don't want to but, at that age, they are constantly growing and moving on to the next toy so there are plenty of things you can buy for when she grows out of her current toys.
- rocking horse - disney blurays - lamaze toys - walker - blocks that go in a bucket thing - play tray for her bumbo - (I'm sure there's more, we went a bit mad...)
DS was 5 weeks last year. I got him clothes 1 size up (he ended up growing through 2 sizes last winter so I had to scramble for warm clothes when the spring clothes were already out) a few books, a jumbo pack of diapers and a few baby toys.
This year he's getting all clothes 1 size up and I think he needs new shoes so were going to the mall to get sized today.
ILs got him a power wheel type thing and SIL got him a really expensive rocker shaped like a turtle.

I agree 1 K is nuts! But my DD is 9 months and while I know she won't care or understand, I love Christmas gift giving and can't help but spoil her a little! I bought things she can grow into over the next year. I bought a baby piano, B parum parum drum, a soft baby doll, a set of nice wooden blocks and books. Even if she doesn't play with them now she will over the next year.
I honestly can't remember what I did for the first holiday. I generally buy books and toys for the holidays. I'd consider something your child will grow into if you want to really have a gift. Maybe a baby push toy?
